The Football (Soccer) Thread #99 - "Sometimes in football you have to score goals"!

Hmm, guess it was my turn anyway...

Anyhow, here we go again (at least some leagues are about to begin) - post away folks!

Oh, and I have to give credit to Thierry Henry for the title.

Initially I wanted to make use of Ebbe Skovdahl's "Statistics are just like mini-skirts, they give you good ideas but hide the most important thing" - but it was too long unfortunately

Morning

Thank you for starting . Damn, too bad about the title - that'd have made a good title .

The banner link: http://www.teelle.net/kuvat2/ft.jpg

Thanks for the Spanish league starting date

and G, thanks for posting those pictures on the last thread .

Real's season is starting today. Medicals in the morning and flight leaving in the afternoon for China.

I wish Valdano has something good to say about the defender issue in that press conference of his.. We really do need that defender as fast as possible so that we'll have the incorporation done for the most when the league starts.

Flavio is going somewhere on loan it seems. I remember reading about Middlesborough yesterday, but today Newsnow has headlines about Dortmund..

Also looks like Makaay is going to Bayern and Milito is going to Zaragoza..

And oh so interesting: Ronaldo is looking a fair bit slimmer than this time last year *lol*. AS even had an article a bout it a couple of days ago I think.. Serisouly though, it's a good thing - I don't care how much he weighs as long as he does his job (and he did last season), but this does show that he's really serious about next season which gets him quite a handful of points .

ed to add: Oh, this was nice to read

Quote:
Yahoo - Peter Velapplan: "the players of Real Madrid are like leeches"

Peter Velappan, Secretary General of the Asian Confederation of Soccer, loaded yesterday with hardness against Real Madrid and its players by the numbers that the white equipment handles to play parties in its Asian tour: "we have welcomed equipment worldwide during years and no equipment had requested these crazy numbers. The prices that are requesting are worthy of mercenarios. In history something had been seen never thus. We respected the players of Real Madrid, but they would not have to be like leeches, would not have to absorb the blood of the followers who maintain them. The amounts that request are unacceptable ".
Ever so lovely of him to start calling the players leechess. I'm sure the presidents of the teams and FA's have had Raul, Zizou and Guti all wearing black skimasks, behind their doors in the middle of the night banging on their doors and demanding all their money, hmpf.

Oh and as for Real being greedy? Well, what else is new. We have a saying "ei se ole tyhmä joka pyytää, vaan se joka maksaa" which fits this nicely too.. Loosely translated: The stupid one is the one who pays, not the one who asks. Meaning can you really blame Real for asking astronomical sums when there clearly are people ready to pay even those sums..

Better this way actually, if the sums were smaller or if there were more people ready to pay those suims, the boys would be all worn out even before the season would start. Besides, if being greedy bastards will keep them out of debt, I'm all for it . Of course I withhold the right to swear profusely when I finally get to Bernabeu to notice that the ticket prices are astronomical .

From Valdano's press conference:

Flavio, Tote and Rodrigo (Andrea, Dexa can you help me? Who on earth is this guy? ) won't be going to Asia - meaning they're out or well on their way.

The Malaysia friendly has been replaced by a friendly in Thailand, opponent not yet known.

After he was asked, Valdano said there have been no inquiries after Makelele (got the impression there might have been rumours again). Valdano was pretty adamant about this.

The people going to Asia are: Casillas, César, Roberto Carlos, Michel Salgado, Miñambres, Helguera, Rubén, Pavón, Raúl Bravo, Figo, Beckham, Makelele, Guti, Zidane, Solari, Ronaldo, Raúl, Portillo, Morientes, Julio César, Cambiasso, Celades, McManaman y Munitis

Anyways, no big surprises there. Really not happy seing Munitis' name there though

From Soccerage.com
Wanted: A Woman To Play In Serie A For Perugia

Controversial Perugia president Luciano Gaucci is searching for a woman to play for his team in Serie A.

"Within six months we'll have a woman playing in Perugia's red strip," news agency Ansa quoted him as saying. "I'm convinced that Perugia can become the first club on the planet to play a woman with men in the first division."

He continued: "I'd be astonished if anyone kicked up a fuss. Firstly because it's not forbidden in the rules, which only mention men playing in women's teams.

"Secondly women have the same rights as men, which should be respected on the football field as in all walks of life."
That's interesting

No problem .

. I read at the Finnish forum and so far they were thinking why not just get Totti to Perugia *g*. Yep, the guy is not the most respected one there, but that's hardly a surprise (not because Italy won us twise mind you, but because of the general North European "they dive, we just tackle a bit harder" mindset...)

Grrr. *shakes fist at greedy Pool*

At least Real's site is all free

That'd mean thank for the link No Use, but us mere non-holders of eseasonticketwhateveryoucallit can't see the bit.

And another grrr - my distaste of Munitis grows, and Celades too for not accepting the fact that he's not going to get to play almost ever and therefore getting a transfer because I just read that Borja (and Nunez too) were forced to stay in Madrid because there had to be room for these idiots

If I didnt read it wrong, Rodrigo was playing this past year in Brasil, in the "Gremio". They say Atletico de Madrid wants him but dont know whats gonna happen with him.

Wow, R.Madrid arrived to China. They say it was like a thousand persons waiting for them at the airport. omg, the travel lasted for almost 14 hours!

Ahaa, thanks for that .

Heh, I couldn't even imagine what it'd be like being on a plane that long . Well, to be entirely honest, I don't even remember what being on a plane feels lie period . Last time I was, it was for a trip to Spain actually, but that was when I was only about 7 or so, so I don't remember much at all about the whole trip. I remember eating chicken (I've been told that's about all I ate there because my parents didn't want me eating anything odd because of my allergies that were just surfacing then) and I have faint recollection of a train conductor patting my head . Great memory - a week long trip and that's all I remember

I was just at Marca's site and I was looking at the few pics they have of the team landing and it took me a while to recognice this fellow:

I've just never seen him with that much hair

Some more easily recognicable ones

and I have to honest here, those sunglasses scare me, dunno why, but they do

Yep, I'm with you!! What a pair of sunglasses so ugly!!

You know, I've read that Capello still wants Morientes! Hes been after him from a long time ago..and Moro said that if he's leaving R.Madrid it would be just to go somwhere else where he's sure the coach has faith in him, and Capello seems that way, so.. Dont know what might happen

Omg!! Ive just read in marca that the meteorological institute says that a typhoon called "Imbudo" goes in direction to Yunnan, just where R.Madrid is staying!!!
Omg, I hope everything goes ok for them!!

Dexa - yeah, I saw a bit about the Capello link again too. I used to really dislike Roma but now that's simmered down. Dunno why, actually, dunno even why I didn't like them at first.. But it's a relatively big club, so it could be good . Unless he hits the invisible practically-no-Spaniard-may-do-well-here-wall ..

From Real's first training session:

and from after lunch:

Good to see Becks isn't sticking to Macca's side all of the time . And always good to see Solari smiling and Carlos grinning *g*.

NoUse - Hee, I'm just bitter and therefore blind . I have an immense distate for the way Pool run their site and whenever I see the word eseasonticket, I go elsewhere. Fast. While swearing profusely. All because a few seasons ago you could listen to the matches there for free and then they got greedy..

Sorry if it seemed like I was jumping at your throat . I shall try to brave myself and go watch the clip .

ed: watched it now - great stuff from the guy. I hope he keeps it up

Real Madrid needs to tour America....now especially since they have Becks..

ManU is HUGE in america...only because they publicize everything..

Real madrid should do a autograph/friendly tour...with practices open to the public..and maybe some soccer camps for the youth of america.

They would become huge!
