Hey, thanks for the new thread! And to brighten it up (well for me at least), look!

Story

That's right, the most boring transfer saga of the transfer window is over - Andrei Arshavin is finally an Arsenal player I'm a bit late, I know, but I just found out. Anyway I'm so happy, I don't think I've been this happy about a signing in a long time. I know we still need other reinforcements (DCM, for one) and that he'll take time to get used to the league and this team, but anyone who's seen the Everton and West Ham matches will know that Arsenal desperately need a creative option, which we now have. And it's nice to see that all our agony has paid off - I wasn't following it religiously but I had expected to end up disappointed so it's just such a nice feeling not to be. Hurrah!

And has anyone seen the League of Justice yet this month?

I'm happy for you too Gwen. It would have been a disaster if the only player Arsenal had tried to bring in didn't end up becoming your player because the deal was done too late.

No I haven't Sara.

It's interesting. Should I type it out in here to see where everyone is at?

It's made my Jeff Winter. Just in case you don't know who he is, he was one of the most controversial but respected referee in the PL for 25 years. His last game before retiring was the 2003/04 FA Cup Final and is now a radio broadcaster and a columnist, League of Justice being one of them.

How can Arsenal had negotiated with Arshavin almost a day after the transfer window have closed?

And why am I not surprised?

Because the transfer deadline was extended due to the heavy snow? It's kind of stupid though, but I'm not complaining!

Interesting table Sara. What does the Justice league actually measure? I'm not entirely sure. at Stoke at the bottom of the table though. Ha!

It just means that all the referee decisions during games that were wrong that costed your team points. It's a table showing what the league would look like if those referees had made the right decision. So say, if another team got a penalty against you but it wasn't actually a penalty and that it has costed the other team say, 2 points. The league of justice would give that team 3 points as it wasn't actually a pen.

So looking at the table, you can see which teams have been affected by poor referee decisions the most. Sunderland being one of them.

There really is a big difference in the two Sunderland positions.

I'm interested, if say a team is by far the better team but then the referee makes a bad call on a penalty and then the team that had totally dominated and looked like scoring end up losing 3-0 how would he award the points on that one? Do you say that if the ref hadn't made that decision then the team that had been dominating wold have gone on to win the game or what?

No, because then he would have made it as the other team losing 3-1. It's not 100% accurate because I know referee decisions to effect the rest of the game but it's a fair view.

There was goal difference and points and stuff on the table too but I didn't type it all out on here.

It's been made by a real referee so it's not fake or anything, it's official.

Yeah I remember Jeff Winter.

Yeah that's the thing with that table, because bad decisions can turn a whole game round, a game that you looked like winning or at least getting something from can turn into a convincing defeat with a bad decision over a penalty or a wrongful sending off.

And I meant that the bad decision led to the opposition getting a penalty, so I guess your saying that it would turn out 2-0 so you still wouldn't get the 3 points in his table. Even though had that decision not been given then the other team were unlikely to have got the other 2 goals.

Ar I see what you mean now. Yeah it probably would be put as 2-0 then but I'm not 100% sure.

I think that it's a good view though. Lots and lots of fans complain about referees mistakes all the time and I guess this is just something that is made to make them feel better, or worse, if you're in Stoke's shoes!

Edit: "The aim was not to highlight Refs decisions but to see exactly what difference they make over a season, whether or not the old adage that these decisions even themselves out is in fact correct. Over the years it has been done that in fact, with the odd exception, has proved to be the case. Referees mistakes, honest errors of judgement do appear to be growing but it is player's mistakes that have much more effect on the result of the game. That being said the number of high profile errors is far too high. Referees are very much under scrutiny and in this possibly lies the problem, common sense goes out of the window and Refs reach for the card far too readily as their aim to please the assessor takes over. There is this fear that it is better to be strong and get it wrong than weak and be criticized for not take the strongest disciplinary action. Furthermore Refs taking action against the top players and clubs are often not supported by the authorities who pamper to the clubs wishes. This week we see a perfect example, whilst Lampard quite rightly should get his red card rescinded the FA have announced no further action against Bosingwa.

The FA should take back control of the game, but they will not do anything to upset the biggest clubs." - Jeff Winter.

Just saw the Beckham interview. I can completely understand why he would want to stay at AC Milan, his England career is obviously very important to him and there is no doubt that by staying at AC Milan he would increase his chances of being picked.

I'm not surprised at Given's comments today. He's not the type to lie so I do believe what he said was true, in which case that means that Newcastle did want the money and didn't do everything they could to keep him after all. Which I just find ridiculous, they clearly need to get their priorities straight.

nice thread

i do it find it amusing after all the amount of stick man city got this transfer window.

man utd, spurs and arsenal all spent more on a single player and spurs spent more in total than man city, after all that media rubbish, i hope fans around the country realise that not everything written in the mirror is true.
