Football/Soccer #116: The Season's Over... The Worrying Has Just Begun

Continue, my darlings! And sorry if the thread title is silly, I couldn't think of anything else. And it did reflect the current mood of the thread

-

You're right Dan, there are too many people in football dying lately

And yes, that's also the reason why I haven't really posted in here - everything seems a bit trivial compared to deaths but I think it's fine to talk about Crewe as well - it's the football thread after all, not the "In Memorium" thread... sorry if I sounded a bit crass there. Anyway, I'm sorry to hear of your transfer woes. Why do neither of them seem to want to sign on, do they have more lucrative offers from other clubs?

And Nicky Maynard as well. Oh, don't tell me bigger clubs are swooping in - it's always the same story.

Glad to hear of your win Cat! Yes, I'm glad the season is over as well, it's been a nightmare few months for Arsenal as well. Hey, at least Euro '08 is upon us soon. I can't wait for that, actually. It's good to be able to just watch football as neutrals and not have to worry about our clubs/teams (as none of our national teams are in it, right? I know mine certainly isn't )

Thanks for the new thread, Gwen. Nice title. And I'm sadly underwhelmed by Euro 2008, but I guess it'll come. Somehow.

About the keepers ... I understand Ben Williams, the first-choice, leaving more than I do young Owain fon Williams. Ben has been at the club for four years and have gotten a bit of undeserved stick, so he thinks he can do better - not sure he can, but good luck to him anyway.

I have high hopes for Owain - he's already been capped at U-21 level for Wales. He has been at the club for five years without playing a game, though (not even in the Tin Pot Trophy Johnstone's Paint Trophy), so he's understandably a bit worried about signing a new contract only to be put on the bench again.

But he's forgetting that he's still only 21 and that Crewe's always been about giving the next in line at the club a fair chance before getting a new one (remember that old cliche about "Crewe's famous production line"?), so I think his career would benifit from signing a new contract. Derby's rumoured to be interested, but there's no way he's gonna be first-choice there, and arguably his career would be better off playing first team football at Crewe than sitting on the Derby-bench? Anyway, as he's under 24 we would at least recieve a fair compensation if he leaves, unlike we would with Ben.

Thanks!

I usually don't like international tournaments as much as club football, you know that, but I'm vaguely looking forward to Euro '08. It gives me some football to watch in the summer, anyway, which will be fun... and certainly more relaxing than club football.

Ah, I see. Yes, I've never quite understood why someone would move to a bigger club just so they could sit on the bench - is the prestige of the club that important that it's better to sit on some bench than to play, or is money (and not playing) the primary objective? I don't know. Maybe I'm being idealistic but surely the priority of each player is to, you know, play? Apparently not. Well if he leaves you'd get money for him at least

all

Gwen - I have to admit I'm quite the bad fan too - I completely forgot Real's match yesterday . Went to a friend's 30th birthday party the night before, got home really late and more than a bit inebriated, so sunday was spent more or less sleeping it off.. .

But hey, they won 5-2, so me not following must have been a good thing .

On a completely off topic note: Love that the Russians won the hockey world championship *G*.

On a more sober and on topic note: yeah, too many football people dying. But then again, too many people dying full stop. (China for example.. christ.. )

Forgetting half the stuff I meant to say, but I've gotta run - Battlestar Galactica starting

You're right, I'm looking forward to watching football as a neutral fan without having to bite my nails for the entire game. Scotland should have been there, we beat France twice (once in Paris), but it wasn't to be. I still haven't decided which team I'm going to casually adopt for the tournament.

My season's not over. This week I wish i had a fast forward button just so i could know the outcome of the SPL.

And my sister's boyfriend supports Hull, so hoping they do well.

Awww.

It is very exciting for us neutrals though. Personally I think Celtic can only throw it away now.

Well now it's almost over anyway Soon enough my title will work for you, too!

Anyway. Good luck to Hull, and Cat, same here! But there's still time to decide anyway, so no worries with that... or you could just watch everything and hope all scorelines will be 5-4 or something like that oh and I like your icon. I recognise the scene, I remember smiling when I saw that but the colouring of your icon itself is nice, too.

Congrats T! And hee, I guess it's OK. Real did win anyway. And BSG - I don't watch that, is it good? I've heard it's good.

I've always had an odd soft spot for Croatia, don't know why. I like their manager, and they were great when they came over here for a friendly last month. Plus the fact that they stopped England getting to Austria/Switzerland gets them major bonus points. So I think I may go with them.

That scene is my obssession du jour. And my LJ friend Alyssa made it, her icons are always amazing.

The whole Eduardo thing makes me depressed though. But I want them to do well - yes, not just the England thing (although that is a major plus point) but because, well, I want them to win it for Eduardo!

You're right, her icons are amazing. I'll go over them properly one day and save stuff - who knows, I might just use something

Thanks *g*. My download finally finished too, so I'll probably watch that tonight instead of the final since .. you knwo.. Manu or Chelsea.. not much of a choice.

Heh, I had half a rant here about why it wasn't so good that ended with something along the lines of but it's still so damn good and that well, it has Callum Keith Rennie which would've been pretty much enough for me anyways *g*. Which brings me to another ot point: effing CSI head honchos . Apparently they had Katee Sackhoff all lined up and all, but someone decided that she wasn't the one for the role. Would've made me actually look forward to seeing CSI (something that hasn't happened in ages).

Err, yes, football is nice too

Yeah, I know. I have steadfastly refused to watch the Champions League final when I first realised who the finalists were. The past few days I've been putting my fingers in my ears and going "lalalalala..." (OK not really but I've been ignoring all the usual macho bull****ting that goes on from each side before big matches and that was surprisingly easy to do). I'll go check who's won though.

Pah, United won on 6-5 on penalties after it was 1-1 at FT, so now they've gone and done the Double. I feel sick. Then again Cashely Cole gets to taste bitter defeat yet again, so that's nice as well. Guess I'll take the positives which means Arsenal still has a chance to be the first London team to win it...

Hmm, OK. I don't watch CSI either so I don't know what you're talking about what TV shows do you watch though?

I'm no Man Utd fan really, but I violently loathe Chelsea, so I was cheering when Van Der Sar saved Anelka's spot kick to hand Utd the win. Plus, it was nice to see a Scottish manager winning it.

Even if it's SAF? I've had my head buried in the sand the past few days so I didn't see it and I have no interest in doing so. The match sounded funny though, I think I might have enjoyed myself - Ronaldo missing his kick, Terry missing his kick, Drogba being sent off... if only Cashley Cole had missed as well, oh well.

As for who I hate more - I don't know, I honestly don't. I hate both with a passion. So you can see why I chose to ignore the final and now all the subsequent media wankery over how good this United team is the truth is, Arsenal handed the title to United when we self-destructed in January/February. *bitter Arsenal fan talking*

Gwen - I did it like I predicted - watched the Real match from last weekend and occasionally turned in and eventually watched a bit of the overtime & the penalties. Which brings me to: ergh . AS has had too many Ronaldo articles this week.. I can't say I was unhappy that he was one of guys who didn't score, but can't help being superstitious in that weird way again and feeling like I was happy a bit too prematurely.. Seriously though, I doubt he'll be heading to Madrid. Can't seem them letting him go that easily and well, he's not just quite all that..

As for CSI, you're not missing much . Occasionally there's some nice snark, but other than that.. I've just gotten into the habit of watching it because it seems slightly more interesting than anything else.. which isn't saying much at all. I watch a fair bit of the other crime shows too (Criminal Minds, Cold Case and such), but can't say I'm really a fan. Hell, I don't think I've really been into a show since Firefly and Wonderfalls . Well, Pushing Daisies is good too. And Dexter occasionally. And Doctor Who &/ Torchwood, but those are kind of on/off things too (can't stand the current companion in DW for example). So I could probably ramble on for ages and the answer would still boil down to me watching a bit of this and a bit of that (which includes a bit of Top Gear even though I don't drive *g*)

ps Win XP install time for me - so here's hoping the computer doesn't blow up *G*
