College Football Discussion Thread: "Go State Go!"

Hey college football fans! The season is almost upon us. I’m looking forward to discussing the highs and lows of your favorite teams here. Being an Illini and NU fan, I don't have much to look forward to. Make sure to drop by and give a holler. After all, Saturday afternoons in the fall is what it’s all about.

Here’s the ESPN/USA Today Top-25 Coaches Poll:

1. Oklahoma
2. Ohio St.
3. Miami
4. Texas
5. Kansas St.
6. Auburn
7. Michigan
8. USC
9. Georgia
10. Virginia Tech
11. Pittsburgh
12. Florida St.
13. Maryland
14. North Carolina St.
15. LSU
16. Tennessee
17. Virginia
18. Notre Dame
19. Washington
20. Wisconsin
21. Florida
22. Purdue
23. Arizona St.
24. Oklahoma St.
25. Tie-- Colorado St., Penn St.

Agree or disagree? Do you think any team is vastly overrated or underrated? I think Kansas St. is ranked a little high. Wisconsin will tank before the season is over. I think Colorado St. should be ranked higher, while I’m expecting Notre Dame to surprise people this year.

Btw, what is everyone’s thoughts on the Maurice Clarett situation? I’ll be surprised if he plays for Ohio St. this season. Not only do questions surround his academic history, but the fact that he’s acknowledged having a sweet car furnished with over $15,000 worth of equipment while not having a job, really makes you wonder. Having friends like LeBron definitely has its benefits. Clarett is clearly violating NCAA rules here. The Buckeyes will really miss his absence if the hammer comes down.

State? I do not think there are any good "state" schools this year.

I only fear our depth, Gore is coming off knee surgery, and we only really have Payton backing him up. I figure Ty Moss, the nations #1 rated high school running back will be redshirted, like The Criminals did with Booker, which is funny with all the hype surrounding him, our wide out, Ryan Moore, was higher rated.

I also think K-State is a bit overrated, but El roberson is one guy i'd not like to play against.

Hey, it’s just a generic expression! Work with me.

I can’t believe Jarret Payton is still playing for the ‘Canes. Damn, that makes him a sixth-year senior! This is it. No more college football after this year. He better make it a season to remember. The guy has been plagued by injuries and bad luck. I hope he can shake those problems this time around.

Kellen Winslow, Jr. His last year before turning pro? Probably so. He'd look awfully good in a Bears uniform.

What? No love for the R*A*M*S of Colorado State? lol They should be ranked higher but that's ok, they'll prove the nation wrong again. Everyone in Colorado is expecting big things from this team this season. More excitement for CSU then for CU. That's not happened, ever. lol CSU has replaced Cecil Sapp with CU transfer Marcus Houston who will be able to play this season even though he just transfered, Bradlee 'Sunshine' Van Pelt has gotten better over the years and is expected to have a huge break out season and of course you have the best, underrated coach in college football..Sonny Lubick.

Colorado INVESCO Field at Mile High 8/30/2003
California Berkeley, CA 9/6/2003
Weber State Hughes Stadium 9/13/2003
Miami (Ohio) Hughes Stadium 9/20/2003
Utah Hughes Stadium 9/27/2003
Fresno State Hughes Stadium 10/4/2003
BYU Provo, UT 10/9/2003
Air Force Hughes Stadium 10/16/2003
Wyoming Laramie, WY 11/1/2003
New Mexico Albuquerque, NM 11/7/2003
San Diego State Hughes Stadium 11/15/2003
UNLV Las Vegas, NV 11/22/20

Then you have CU. I think this will be a down year for them. But I do seeing them finishing at least second in the North Division of the Big 12 and I do see them in a bowl. But with that damn schedule I don't know. lol

08/30/2003 Colorado State (ESPN) Denver ESPN 5:45 PM
09/06/2003 UCLA (ABC) Boulder, Colo. ABC 1:30 PM
09/13/2003 Washington State Boulder, Colo. 1:30 PM
09/20/2003 at Florida State Tallahassee, Fla. TBA

Air Force will be good again, they weren't supposed to do anything at all last season but a 8-5 record, almost upset Notre Dame and Va Tech. They should make another run at the MWC. And can Northwestern get revenge on the Zoomies after that 52-3 bombing a year ago.

Colorado State Announces Timeline For Sonny Lubick Field At Hughes Stadium

Fort Collins, Colo. - Colorado State University Interim Director of Athletics Christine Susemihl today outlined the timeline for the renovation and expansion of Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium.

The goal is to have the entire project completed prior to the beginning of the 2005 season, Susemihl said. The project will be broken down into various components to be completed during the next 24-26 months, beginning with an artificial practice field south of Moby Arena later this fall.

“We have worked diligently with the individuals on our campus and with the staff at HOK and Aller-Lingle about the entire project. We have broken down the project into specific segments that will completed in a timely fashion,” said Susemihl.

The timeline includes:

A new artificial surface practice field will be completed this fall. Design teams for the project have been selected. Construction will begin pending final state approval and the awarding of projects bids. The full, 120-yard playing surface will encompass more than73,000 square feet and be installed on the practice field which runs in a north-south direction nearest to Shields Street on the school’s practice complex South of Moby Arena.
A new playing field surface at Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium will be installed pending the completion of the north end zone seating area.
Two new scoreboards and one new state-of-the-art video board on the south side of the stadium will be installed immediately following the completion of the 2003 home season and in time for use during the 2004 campaign.
Permanent seating in the north end zone, which will result in an 18 percent increase in capacity at the stadium will begin in the fall of 2004. Construction figures to take more than a year.
Major enhancements to the **** ’ Horn club-level seating area, press box level, and the addition of 16 suites available to major donors which will include catered food service, luxury seating will begin as soon as the 2004 season ends.
New concession stands and restrooms on the north concourse of the stadium will be constructed in conjunction with the installation of new permanent seating in that area.
The expansion and renovation project was made possible by a $15.2 million gift provided by the Bohemian Foundation and president Pat Stryker. She made the presentation during a ceremony on May 14, 2003 in Fort Collins.

Colorado St, UCLA, and Florida State as your our of conference schedule? What are they frigging nuts?

K@ will go pro after this season, and since i've sworn off da Bears, i'd like to see the Oakland Raidahs move up to get him.

How about Gore goes down 1st quarter of game 2 vs Florida, and JP comes in and rushs for team records 2300 yards and 47 touchdowns Including 394 YDs and 9 TD's vs Texas in the NCG

I like the way you think.

At least Payton's not as bad as a certain 26-year-old sophomore QB Chris Weinke at FSU.

Why the hell are we [we being UGA since I live in Atlanta though I do prefer the 'Canes] so far up in the poll? We lost just about everyone on O. Richt likes to tinker with two QBs, and though it worked out last season, dunno how long till one of 'em has an ego-trip and screws over the team. Lost all our LBs but hopefully Pollack can step up and lead the D since he's the main man. Special teams isn't bad as long as the punter is capable of replacing Kilgo.

I think Georgia will be decent, i'm not up on their reserves from last year, but i really liked Greene as a freshman, and Shockley is real nice.

Preseason polls mean nothing to me; however, it is nice to see Auburn up there. *knocks loudly on wood*

It's hard to judge right now, but all things considered, I think the SEC will have a tough time this year.

i am so ready for Michigan football this year, ugh, i love it!

coaches poll is BS, OSU shouldn't be that high. i mean, i know they won the national championship last year, but a lot of people aren't even expecting them to win the big 10...ugh, i really don't like OSU, lol.

i saw the best thing ever the other day. this spanish cook at a resturant had a shirt with a block m and "arriba azul" (go blue in spanish) writtin on it. so awesome!

I'm all about Navy footbll too, even though they aren't great

I agree about Ohio St. I’m not expecting them to contend for the national championship this season. They were lucky to get some calls in their favor in the title game against Miami. That bowl game could have easily gone either way. Plus, I’m not impressed with their offense. That holds special meaning if Maurice Clarett doesn’t play this season. This is a squad that is returning a lot of its starters, but they won 3-4 games last year by a margin of 7 pts. or less. That doesn't say much. Heck, Illinois and Purdue almost beat them! Luck was definitely on the Badgers’ side.

Michigan is a good team. They should be able to challenge OSU in the Big 10, but Marlin Jackson’s assault charge is a major hindrance. The Wolverines need him on the field.

I don’t wish any ill well on the guy, especially since he’s coming off a major injury. But I certainly wouldn’t mind seeing Payton go out in glory. Those numbers sound awfully nice. Unfortunately, I think Jarrett has lost a lot of the speed and quickness that he possessed coming out of HS. I haven’t seen it during the brief stints he’s had at RB, and it seems as though his numerous injuries have only slowed him down.

At age 29, little Payton still gives it his all though. I remember us blowing out Pittsburgh and JP taking a hand off, planting his right foot, hopping to the left, planting again and darting to the right for a nice 6 yard gain. I almost shed a tear.

i am so happy to see two of my homestate team making it on the Poll List...Oklahoma State and Oklahoma Univ.

I know that OU dominate the football field ( hoping that they will regain the title this season ) and seeing my hometown team OSU makin' it, i am just estatic especially how we end the season last year with a houston bowl win!

All i can say is let the football madness begin!!

OOH! Ouch, Penn State not even on the list.

Heh, maybe, then, they can actually have a decent season without too much expectations. I would like to see JoPa earn at least one more national title before he retires or passes on...which I think he'll do the latter first because he loves coaching so much. And he loves Penn State! I think people need to forget that Maurice is not the only reason why OSU did well last year. I think people tend to forget about Krenzel and the big hogs up on the line.

The coaches poll is fine. OSU should win the Big 10.
