Best Sports Rivalries

What is your favorite?

For me, witout a shadow of a doubt, Miami vs Florida State.

So much talent on both teams each and every time. Baseball, Football, Track. Close proximity, most having grown up together, same high schools, rivialries built since birth. Fueled through the professional ranks. As soon as the schedules are posted, everyone loks to see,... Miami/FSU.

Second, Boston vs New York
Wider Margin in terms of winning, as New York dominates, with Boston playing the role of little brother, always trying to beat the bigger, older brother but not quite. This past week, another brawl. A wonderous brawl fueled by an undying hatred for the other side. Something that is hard to express sometimes, something Carlos Zambrano in his young years already has in the Chicaco/St Louis rivalry, is always present in the Boston/New York rivalry.

Third
Personal choice, one that unless your a fan, you might not realize, Cincinnati vs Xavier. Cross town rivals, a rivalry of the little guy always beating the big bully. Most hated of them all, as with the Mia/FSU, some of these kids have known each other since birth, the Queen Cities most prized recruits staying home to suit up in either the Black and Red or the Blue and White. Fist fights almost daily in the local malls. One team always better than the other, except on that one day.

Honorable Mention
Chicago and Green Bay. Hatred Rivalry, but paled due to lack of success in recent years by Chicago.

#1 Alabama vs. Auburn - People outside of Alabama don`t understand how big it is year round. The whole state pretty stops during the Iron Bowl. If you have bragging rights, then you can strut around like a king and talk all the smack you want. However it`s hell if you`re on the other side like Bama has been the last two years. However i`m very confident that they`ll end the losing streak this year.

#2 Yankees vs. Red Sox - The game last Saturday pretty much shows how heated it is. Even if you`re not a Red Sox fan, you can`t help but pull for those guys to beat those damn Yankees.

#3 Cowboys vs. Redskins - These two teams has more than there share of epic battles over the years, although the rivarly has lost it`s luster with the Cowboys dominating the Deadskins in the last few years. Of course i expect that continue this season. Even with that nerd Joe Gibbs coming back, the Deadskins are still nothing compared to the great Cowboys IMO and will get crushed by the Boys some more. Until they show me something, i won`t recognize as anything serious.

#4 Miami vs. Florida State

#5 Duke vs. North Carolina(basketball)

Great past rivarlies:

#1 Cowboys vs. 49ers - This was the real Super Bowl from 92-94. Every game was must see tv. Of course the Cowboys won most of the time. However i have to say that the Niners did step it up in 94, although they got lucky with those early turnovers in the NFC title game.

#2 Miami vs. Notre Dame - This was the best rivarly in college football in the late 80`s. In fact it was so hardcore that they stopped playing after 1990. I would love to see them play each other again sometime in the near future, but not right now, because we all know that the Canes would kill Notre Dame.

Yep,. Catholics vs Convicts. I member we had a visitor from Indiana visit us, he was a hardcore ND fan, and it was the last game of our series. Which we lost and he wouldn't shut up about it.

Course, we all know I sure as hell wouldn't either.

And as you said, it'd be cool to play again, but we'd whoop their ass.

It's not in any order...

Notre Dame vs. Michigan- Now I know Notre Dame hasn't been good in recent years but I went to the game last year and it was still brutal. These schools probably have the richest football history and tradition of all of NCAA. Same for ND and USC.

Cubs vs. Cards- If you've seen the games this year I think you know what I'm talking about. It seems like there's some kind of scuffle every game.

Yankees vs. Red Sox- Now I gotta admit I've never seen a game between the two but I saw the huge fight on Sportscenter and they have my vote.

1. North Carolina/Duke basketball- This is without a doubt the best rivalry in any sport..almost year in and year out their both good teams, It's great to watch on tv..but you haven' experienced it till you've saw it in person..you have to remember that these two teams are within about 8 minutes of each other..All the great games between these two, the amazing talent they always seem to have..it just doesn't get any better for me..It's an experience when you live in North Carolina, They actually let us watch the ACC tournament in school..I'm a UNC fan BTW.. heh

2. Yankees/Red Sox-One of the best Rivalries to watch because it's like David vs. Goliath..I'm a Red Sox fan and I understand the greatness of this rivalry, I don't care if you hate both teams your going to watch if your a baseball fan..

3. Honorable mentions- Cowboys/49ers, Celtics/Lakers, Miami vs. Florida State(just gonna get better this year, Go Miami!)..

1. Louisville vs Kentucky - The hate that these two teams share is amazing. The basketball rivalry is one of the best in history. You don't see these two teams play (in regular season) except for one matchup around Christmas time. The fact is this rivarlry became ever more personal when the former KY coach jumped ship and then ended up a few years later as the head coach of Louisville. Pitino's jump from Lexington to Louisville - caused such hatred and bitterness between fans. People from KY felt cheated and people in Louisville know love their once arch enemy coach. When these two teams match up it makes for a great basketball game.

Honorable mentions:

To the college teams (especially in the same state) that try and give the illusion of an intense rivalry. And I am not going to mention any names because I don't want to offend anyone. But I think you all know what I mean. There are some teams that have the rivalry and those that try and make it seem that way.

Very true, my father went to ND and he won't even speak about the rivalry now.

Luck wasn't all that involved w/ those turnovers.

Another rivalry, besides this one, that immediately came to my mind when reading this thread title was Knicks vs. Bulls, back in the day. There are no words to describe how much I *still* hate the Knicks, even now. During the Bulls' reign in the NBA, and when the Knicks were a semblance of being a "good" team, these games were definitely must-see-TV, as well.

ITA with you, of course. But even before that and a even better rivalry, IMO, would be "Bad Boys" Detroit Pistons vs Bulls. It's a classic struggle you can relate to, being so close yet unable to pull out a win. Detroit would punish the Bulls and Jordan everytime they faced each other, and back then the Bulls were very beatable. Plus I don't think anyone was used to how hard Pistons played, flagrant fouling even before that rule was put in effect. So when the time finally came, cause you know it had to one day, it was great to see the Bulls beating em' at there own game. Detroit was a good team w/ great players but none had the speed or hunger that Jordan and the Bulls had. I even remember Pistons walking off the court even before the game was finished. They learned alot in that series...to play hard, not give up and not letting them get in there heads.

Seemed like history repeated itself when the Bulls started facing the Knicks. They played the same way Detroit did and even beat the Bulls in some games, but they just didn't have quite enough. Great series to watch though, you always knew someone would get into a fight.

One of the latest rivalries I enjoyed watching and brought back alot to the game it was missing was Sacramento Kings vs LA Lakers.

i think, without a doubt, the greatest rivalry is the Yankee vs. Red Sox rivalry... it doesn't get any more intense than that.

Babe, Bucky, Buckner, Boone...

I hate rivalries. They freak me out. And I don't like fighting either.. I've seen the Red Sox and the Yankees fight and I hate it.

Argentinean Soccer: Boca vs. River

General Soccer: Argentina vs Brazil

Swimming: Ian Thorpe vs Pieter van den Hoogenband. And the fact that they're friends outside the races is plain amazing.
