I've had an issue with the US Olympic Swim trials for quite a while now, due to this very issue. While I understand the need to conduct them close enough to the Games to decrease the risk of something changing between the months the team's named an when the Games occur, there's also such a thing as "too soon." Even just a week earlier, and these test results would've been back in time for Lara Jackson and Tara Kirk to be added to the team. From what I gather, Hardy's only temporarily dropped her appeal; she'll pick it back up after the Olympics, but didn't want to (or was told not to) distract the National Team right now. It's a messy situation, but I think dropping the appeal was the right thing to do. There was no way it would be solved in time for her to go to Beijing, so keeping it up would only be distracting and selfish. As it is, I don't see her able to appeal for less than a two year ban successfully, even if ingestion was accidental. That's not the way this sport works, thankfully. Personal accountability is huge. Gary Hall Jr. (who is now blogging for the LA Times) wrote a really interesting piece about sports and accountability in his blog relating to the IOC revoking Pettigrew's relay medal that I think is definitely worth the read.
