 You could tell that the persona he tried to show to the world was slowly crumbling then and that he was feeling immense guilt over what his actions caused. Bellamy cares so much even if he tries to pretend that he doesn't give a crap. That line on what his mother would say if she ever knew the person he had become was so, so important. He holds himself to a high standard and beats himself up if he doesn't think he has achieved that. Goes back to April's point on another thread on him not comparing himself to others but to an ideal he has when it comes to himself. __________________
