i also used to not make any icons but then once you are into it, you try to do more and improve and so on.

Because .gif extensions aren't accepted by the standard avatars program. It's not a valid extension for it. There's no text allowed because it limits the standardness of the avatars, with text you often put avatars into context and we try to avoid that.
