I think disappear, Al might die though since maggie had a baby and has no time for filming she probably left the show too. And no it would not be surprising or unusual for a walking dead show to kill or let leave two major characters in a season. Has happened on TWD multiple times.

I just asked in the FTWD others thread why you think it will be Al but now reading this also makes sense...however I feel like the Al/Isabelle storyline still needs to be resolved somehow.

They will probably just let the al/isabelle storyline disappear. Or al survives and leaves while alicia dies. But I hope it would be the other way round then.
