I think there is a team of voluntary mods who even have their own secret board called moderator support team, where they discuss who needs a temp mod for this or that time.

Yes, us members of the Moderator Support Team get assigned to boards temporarily to help out when a permanent moderator is away or if a board is new and doesn't have moderators yet
