I haven't watched it YET, but I'm going to.

So... not sure exactly what the deal is with how they're voting works, I think they have a public vote on it next month, but there is a lot of talk about Australia not having legalized same-sex marriage already. I know their government is a lot more conservative than most of the world is led to believe, but... for a country so damn diverse and generally multicultural, it's a bit surprising that it hasn't happened already.

Didn't know. I always thought they have gay marriage. I am surprised they don't and I hope they legalize like Germany did.

I am very please that Merkel was willing to put it to a vote, even if she didn't agree with it personally. I wish more politicians would put their own stuff aside and let democracy work how it was intended, by letting people choose what they want.

Congratulations Germany again it was a big step! And I agree with you Amelia. Praise for Angela Merkel for giving the Parliament the opportunity to vote in spite of the fact that she personally is not in favor of same sex marriage. Not surprising as her political affiliation is with the Christian Party.

some here say this was a tactical vote. she allowed the law to get through and silenced the conservative critics à la "i was against it, what could i do?" but even if this was the case i still give her credit for making a good decision based on the good of my country. if it helps her wind the next election, good for her.

How can you not be in favour of a basic right. I wouldn't pat her on the back. If the vote had turned out the other way she would have celebrated.

Conservative politicians are largely financed by certain Christian organizations, so often they play along with what they know their financers want. It's sad, but it's reality. The separation of Church and State has never truly existed. On paper, maybe, but not in execution.

Of course it doesn't. Which it's why I won't be patting her on the back. She let the vote go ahead, but her backers are the ones denying us basic rights.
