I'll never get over how Rumple is able to make Belle feel so safe, so secure. He holds his arms wide for her to run into, and he reassures her that she has nothing to fear, as long as he is there. He's just a naturally gentle, loving, nurturing person - the fact that he knows to put his coat around her, both to prevent shock and to make her feel warm and comfortable, shows that (not that it's the only thing that does, but it's something that not everyone would think of)

Rumple told Bae's grave that it made him feel like a man to be able to protect his son, to take care of him.. I think that speaks SO much to his character. To Rumple, being a MAN does not mean being a macho, arrogant bully - it means being loving, warm, caring and protective.
