Actually, I think becoming the Dark One wasn't his destiny, but it rather helps him to fulfill it. I think his destiny is something we still don't know about, like being his mother's downfall or something like that (i.e. Fiona gave him up out of cowardice, which could explain why she doesn't want Rumple to find out about it). And the "similar dilemma" Rumple faces in SB could be that Gideon is prophesied to be his undoing.

Just had a theory after reading this: What if Rumple misunderstood the prophecy that the blind witch gave him (I think it was season 2 or season 3) because he thought it was Henry but the "boy that would be his undoing" would be his son. (pigbacking off your theory.)

Hmm.. Here's the exact prophecy:

Seer: You will be reunited with your son, and it will come in a most unexpected way. Rumpelstiltskin: How? Seer: A boy… A young boy will lead you to him. But beware, Rumpelstiltskin, for that boy is more than he appears. He will lead you…to what you seek. But there will be a price. The boy… Will be your undoing.

Rumple and Belle are supposed to go to the Dark Realm to find young Gideon, so I guess it could work..
