10 things you may not know about The Full Monty

It’s the film which turned Begbie from Trainspotting and Denzil from Only Fools and Horses into unlikely sex symbols, briefly became the UK’s biggest ever success at the box office and made it impossible to hear Donna Summer’s disco anthem Hot Stuff without busting out a few moves.

Twenty years to the day that it first hit cinemas, here’s a look at 10 things that you may not know about the 90s ultimate British comedy, The Full Monty.

1. Its most famous scene was nearly cut

The scene in which the gang begin dancing in unison to Donna Summer’s Hot Stuff while waiting in the dole queue became The Full Monty’s most memorable.
But according to reports it was very nearly cut from the film over fears that it was ‘too unrealistic’.

2. It beat Titanic to the Best Film BAFTA

The Full Monty cleaned up at the 1998 BAFTAs, winning four awards including Best Actor (Robert Carlyle) and Best Supporting Actor (Tom Wilkinson).
Most impressively, it beat LA Confidential, Mrs Brown and Titanic to the title of Best Film, with the latter going home completely empty-handed.

3. It was hit with a plagiarism suit

The makers of The Full Monty were hit with a plagiarism lawsuit a year after its release by a future Oscar-nominated screenwriter.
Anthony McCarten, who picked up an Academy Award nod for his work on The Theory of Everything, and Stephen Sinclair claimed the film had copied the premise, characterisation and setting of their very own stripping comedy, Ladies Night.
The case was eventually settled out of court.

4. Robert Carlyle hated making it

A ‘load of ********** pish.’ That’s how Robert Carlyle described The Full Monty during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show earlier this year.
The Scottish actor, who played Gaz in the movie, also admitted that he found the shoot tough and that when Fox/Searchlight saw the first cut they expected it to go straight to video.

5. US audiences needed a translation

Screenwriter Simon Beaufoy claims that US studio executives were left perplexed by the film’s name as there wasn’t a character called Monty.
‘The full monty’ wasn’t the only British term that needed explaining across the other side of the Atlantic.
Some US cinemas gave audiences a printed slang guide to help them follow the film’s distinctly Northern dialogue.

6. Its screenwriter turned down the chance to write a sequel

Beaufoy later turned down a large sum of money to write a The Full Monty sequel.
The Oscar-winning screenwriter claims a second helping of Sheffield stripping would have ‘destroyed all the things we were proud of.’
Director Peter Cattaneo also once revealed he was pleased that plans for a sequel fell through, while Robert Carlyle recently told Lorraine Kelly that ‘it would never happen.’

7. Its young star only auditioned for the role to get time off school

Gaz’s son, Nathan, was played by William Snape, a Sheffield-born actor who later went on to appear in Emmerdale, Heartbeat and Holby City.
But the youngster initially had no interest in the role.
In fact, he only decided to audition when the film’s casting agents visited his school with the promise of six weeks off for whoever landed the part.

8. Another Only Fools and Horses star turned down a role

Paul Barber, who played Horse in the film, could have been joined on set by another star of Only Fools And Horses.
Nicholas Lyndhurst, aka loveable dope Rodney in the classic BBC sitcom, was offered a part in The Full Monty.
But his agent didn’t exactly sell it to him (‘darling – availability check: British film, not much money, set in Sheffield, about male strippers’) and he subsequently turned it down.

9. The actors really did go the full monty

Yes, the six leads really did take all their clothes off in front of a 400-strong crowd for the film’s climactic scene.
But they needed quite a bit of Dutch courage to do so.
Director Cattaneo admits that the actors were ‘half full of whiskey’ by the time they revealed all at Sheffield’s Shiregreen Working Men’s Club.

10. It had a different working title

US studio bosses would no doubt have been much more satisfied with one of the film’s more straightforward, if terrible, working titles.
Eggs, Beans and Chippendales was just one of the initial names put forward, with other suggestions including No Man’s Land, Six Ugly Pigs, and Fish and Chippendales.

Thanks for that. When I was watching it the other day, it occurred to me that that the language would probably confuse anyone on the other side of the pond. I love that they had translation of northern slang.

I didn't know that they had to have translation

and I'm so glad that they stuck with the title of the film and not the others

They're lucky it did so well. I agree changing the title would have been wrong.
