Timberlake goes solo on the sidelines

If that singing thing doesn't work out for him, Justin Timberlake may have television to fall back on. Turner Sports has hired the *Nsync singer as a special correspondent, contributing features and making appearances, according to an announcement from the company. Mr.Timberlake has already filmed a series of short spots with Magic Johnson that compare old school basketball stars to today's stars. The spots are running on Turner Network Television this week, during the second round of NBA playoffs.

Justin Timberlake: The Next John Madden?

Pop singer signs on as special correspondent to cover sports for TNT, TBS.

by Jennifer Vineyard

As if having a successful solo career weren't enough, Justin Timberlake is determined to prove that he's got game — literally.

The 'NSYNC singer has signed on as a special correspondent to cover sports for both TNT and TBS, the networks announced Tuesday.

Timberlake's new job as a sportscaster will find him reporting from a variety of sports events for TNT, including the NBA regular season and playoffs, NASCAR races and the PGA Championship. For TBS, he'll appear at major-league baseball games and Big 12 and Pac-10 college football games.

"Justin's interest and enthusiasm not only in the NBA, but in all sports, should help provide our broadcasts with a new, fresh approach," Turner Sports executive producer Mike Pearl said in a statement.

For one of his first assignments, Timberlake teamed with Magic Johnson for a feature called "The NBA Playoffs ... Justified." Timberlake described the skills of "new school" stars, which Johnson compared to "old school" legends, in between shooting some hoops themselves. The spots begin airing this week.

This isn't Timberlake's first venture into sports, or first run-in with Johnson. Besides having recently appeared on "Inside the NBA" with Michael Jordan, he's taken part in the NBA All-Star Weekend for the past two years, and the singer played against Johnson in February 2002's "989 Sports All-Star Hoop It Up" (the event aired live on TNT). In that game, Timberlake hit a long-range jumper over now-fellow TNT analyst Kenny Smith, who won two championships with the Houston Rockets.

Christina, Justin, Others Helping Injured Iraqi Orphan

Boy was severely burned, lost family during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

by Corey Moss

Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake and Ashanti are among a team of celebrities campaigning to bring a burned Iraqi orphan to America for medical treatment.

Mariah Carey, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Angelina Jolie are also lending their names to the Global Medical Relief Fund's efforts to save Ali Ismail Abbas, a 12-year-old boy who was severely injured in an Operation Iraqi Freedom missile strike that killed his family.

Abbas, who has become a symbol of Iraqi civilian suffering in the press, is undergoing medical care in Kuwait for burns on 60 percent of his body. Both of his arms were partially amputated in Baghdad in April.

The Global Medical Relief Fund is a nonprofit organization that helps children who have lost limbs from war, national disaster or illness. Cheryl Shuman, a spokesperson for the group, said the celebrities involved will visit Abbas if enough money is raised to transfer him to a Los Angeles hospital.

More importantly, attaching names like Aguilera and Timberlake helps raise funds and awareness. "Everybody knows that celebrities can get things done that other people can't," Shuman told the French newswire service Agence France-Presse. "My hope is that with the help of these stars we can raise enough money to cover his medical treatment and then take care of this child for the rest of his life." Shuman did not return calls Wednesday.

In other Aguilera charity news, the singer is auctioning off Justified and Stripped Tour tickets and backstage passes on the Web site www.stubhub.com. Proceeds will go to the Women's Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh.

Fans have another way to get backstage on the tour. Aguilera is organizing what she's calling the Xposed Velvet Rope Xperience, a package that includes a guaranteed seat in the first 10 rows, a pre-show backstage tour and an after party. The deal is available to members of her official fan club, Xposed.

Lance Bass To Star In 'Gatsby' Film With Paris Hilton

'NSYNC singer also writing horror film called 'Imaginary Friend.'

by Ryan J. Downey

So what does Lance Bass have in common with hotel heiress Paris Hilton?

Well, besides being blonde and getting invited to socialite-stuffed shindigs, the 'NSYNC vocalist and the older half of the model/actress Hilton sisters are teaming up for the latest Hollywood take on an F. Scott Fitzgerald classic.

"[It's] a remake along the lines of 'The Great Gatsby,' but younger," Bass explained at Wednesday's "Matrix Reloaded" premiere in Los Angeles. Bass will star in the currently-in-development flick, one of many he has on his plate.

"I'm writing my first horror film right now, called 'Imaginary Friend,' " he added. "It should be along the lines of that old fun Freddy Krueger-type stuff. ... We've got a nice imaginary friend-type [slasher character] that will scare the bejesus out of ya'."

An avid horror film fan, Bass said he's bummed he's not part of this fall's "Freddy vs. Jason" film. "I was so mad 'cause I didn't know they were filming it [until they were finished]. I would have begged to die in that movie. That would've been my dream."

But he has plenty of other projects through his Free Lance Entertainment, including "some kids movies," to tide him over.

Lance's film and television work, JC Chasez's solo album, Joey Fatone's comedy record, Chris Kirkpatrick's managing work with the band Ohno, and Justin Timberlake's summer tour will keep 'NSYNC from reconvening anytime soon, and it looks like Justin could be next to follow in Lance and Joey's Tinseltown footsteps.

Timberlake has been sent several scripts in the last few months, including "Superman," though a spokesperson for the singer said it was unclear whether they wanted him to read for the lead role or Super pal Jimmy Olsen. And since that project currently has no director attached and Timberlake has television and tour commitments, it will likely be some time before he commits to any new projects.

Black Eyed Peas Vow Timberlake Clip Won't Get Dixie Chicks Treatment

Video for socially conscious song won't attack President Bush, Will.I.Am says.

by Corey Moss

LOS ANGELES — With the world growing weary of "weapons of mass destruction," "shock and awe" and "bunker busters," wordsmith Will.I.Am has coined a new term befitting the era of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

"I don't wanna get Dixied with it," the Black Eyed Peas rapper said Thursday, explaining video plans for "Where's the Love," the group's collaboration with Justin Timberlake. "We don't want to play on what the song's really about, because they ain't going to play our sh-- if we bombard it like that. We going to be on some Dixie Chicks-type sh--."

The Dixie Chicks, of course, faced harsh criticism and suffered a slump in album sales after singer Natalie Maines told a London audience the group was embarrassed that George W. Bush was from Texas. Black Eyed Peas and Timberlake keep the president out of it, but they do address the world's problems in their upcoming single.

The video, which Will is directing next weekend in Los Angeles, may not be "Dixied," but Will said to expect some other "crazy sh--."

"It has to do with our own form of propaganda," he said at the Music Video Production Associations Awards. "The media and the government have their way of doing it. And we're going to inform the people what it is that we want them to know, how we think about life and how we live our life and what consumes our mind, socially. So it'll be a little of that and a little of us hanging out."

"Where's the Love" has yet to hit radio and video outlets, but the Black Eyed Peas are counting down the minutes.

"The world needs this song right now," Will said. "There's no song like that in urban music, pop music. We're saying some pretty deep stuff, some conscious stuff."

Black Eyed Peas and Timberlake will perform the song live together when the rap group joins the pop star on his Justified and Stripped Tour, which kicks off June 4 in Phoenix.

"I want to [perform it] during his show," Will said. "That'd be most powerful."

Joey Fatone To Play Lounge Singer In 'Cool' New Flick

'The Cooler' also stars William H. Macy, Alec Baldwin, Maria Bello.

by Kristin Roth

While 'NSYNC are laying low, Joey Fatone has been rolling the dice with his acting career. Fatone, who made his most recent onscreen appearance in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," is set to appear next in "The Cooler," a movie about casino life in Las Vegas.

According to a spokesperson for Lions Gate Films, the flick, which also stars William H. Macy, Alec Baldwin, Maria Bello and Estella Warren, tells the story of a gambler so unlucky that his bad fortune rubs off on anyone near him. One of the last mob-run casinos in Vegas decides to use him to "cool off" their hottest winners, but to the casino's chagrin, things heat back up when he meets his lady luck in the form of a cocktail waitress.

Fatone will play a lounge singer named Johnny Cappella, who has his own ideas about how things should be done. The film will hit theaters in November.

Justin Timberlake Says Next 'NSYNC Album Will Sound 'Different'
Singer is nominated to receive two honors at upcoming BET Awards.

When a music critic suggested to Justin Timberlake recently that the world in which his career was spawned is a distant memory, the singer immediately got defensive.

"Teen pop will never be dead," he said. "The death of teen pop and its venue as it was, sure, but ... as long as there's teens and as long as we have culture with popular music in it, teen pop will never die, as far as I'm concerned. I just think it takes on a different head."

So when 'NSYNC reunites in the studio this fall, expect the group to take on different heads, and not in a cool, special effects sort of way, as they've done in the past.

"As a creative person that hasn't even thought about what we would work on and where the direction would go, I know that it would have to be something a little new, creative and different," Timberlake said. "And so I can't make any promises on what it's going to sound like, or if we even feel confident enough to put it out. I mean, I'm sure we will."

Personally, Justin has seen his tastes evolve since the group's 2001 release, Celebrity.

"I've become so much more open to rock music," he said. "I just enjoy it so much now more than ever. And I think I'm fully dug into all different styles of music now. I just think that comes with when you mature as a person, your tastes change."

One of those other styles is certainly hip-hop. After experimenting with rap collaborations on his solo debut, Timberlake has solidified his place in that game by recording guest vocals on upcoming albums from Bubba Sparxxx (on a song called "Hootenanny") and Black Eyed Peas.

Justin met Bubba through Timbaland, who staged their first collaboration on the Justified track "Right for Me," and the Black Eyed Peas through clubbing in Hollywood.

"I remember when [Will.I.Am] played me the track on the phone, I had already started hearing a melody," Justin recalled. "It was just one of those [instances of] creative people working together [and it] just working out."

Like another white artist of late who seems to top the charts with everything he touches, Timberlake has managed to win over the respect of black artists and their fans. At the upcoming BET Awards, he is nominated for two awards, the same as Eminem.

"When they first played [my] first video on BET, I was like 'Whoa!' " Justin recalled. "That's when I think I kind of realized that this was a bird of a different feather."

Timberlake credits his soulful touch to growing up in Memphis, "the blues capital of the world, as we like to say."

"I remember going down to Beale Street when I was young and listening to those voices come out of those bars and they were just soulful," he said. "And it's the Bible Belt, so every choir in a church in Memphis is a gospel choir, whether they're black, white, Mexican, so I think that's more or less where it kind of came from."

Britney Who?
Justin Timberlake finally moves on. Plus, get out of J.Lo's wallet!
by BeatBoxBetty

Justin Timberlake may be experiencing amnesia these days, but it's not because he was smacked in the noodle. By all accounts it looks like the lucky dog is currently consumed with Cameron Diaz. But what about that other famous blonde he used to blow bubble gum with? Perhaps Justin's just too busy with his current angel to even notice if she's alive.

On top of every tabloid in town declaring that Cameron (31) and Justin (22) are the hottest couple in town, reports are coming in that he just cancelled plans to record a duet for Britney Spears' new album. While it would definitely help the Princess of Pop's missing-in-action career, a spokesman for Justin told WENN.com, "He's too busy right now and can't fit it in." Ouchity ouch ouch!

Even Justin's 69-year-old granny knows that his "Cry Me A River" days are over. PeopleNews reports that sassy Sadie Bomar is delighted her grandson is getting on with his life with a mature girl like Cameron. "Justin is on the phone to her quite a bit as he isn't always able to be there for her in person because of his tour," she told reporters. "The good thing about Cameron is that she's older and more mature and can deal with that... He likes that because she's more settled down and sure of herself than Britney was. She is more emotionally settled. Justin is really settled down and sure of himself, Britney wasn't. Cameron has had relationships and is more stable."

Justin and Cameron Heat Up Florida
It looks like things are getting pretty darn serious for the blonde couple du jour, Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz. Gossip mills are claiming that he is so in love with his new gal pal, he's even flown his mother (Lynn Harless) from her Tennessee home all the way to to Florida to meet Diaz. A source close to Timberlake told reporters, "This is an official 'meet the parents' summit, Justin's been telling his pals that Cameron's the one -- he wants to make sure he goes about everything the right way."

Recently the two were spotted at the trendy nightclub called Opium and one fellow clubber told the Daily Star, "Cameron was all over him. She was hanging off his shoulder as he ate. They were very touchy-feely." Another source who spotted the two lovebirds at the Mint Lounge said, "Justin showed up the other night with Cameron. They had around 20 people fussing over them and he stayed dancing with Cameron until late." Sounds like a match made in disco heaven, right? Yes, but the only conflicting bit of news is that some insiders are saying that Diaz has also been spotted out and about with her old flame Jared Leto. Could they just be good friends these days? Maybe. Maybe not!

Joey Fatone Is Hungry Like The Wolf In Latest Movie

'NSYNC singer starring in modern musical version of 'Little Red Riding Hood.'

by Corey Moss

My, Joey Fatone, what big ears you have.

The 'NSYNC singer and "Fame" host is donning wolf ears and more for his next movie, a musical based on the classic fairytale "Little Red Riding Hood."

Fatone began shooting the movie, simply titled "Red Riding Hood," this week in the Los Angeles area with a cast that includes Debi Mazar ("The Tuxedo") as the mother and Lainie Kazan ("My Big Fat Greek Wedding") as the grandmother, according to a publicist for the project. Newcomer Morgan Thompson is playing the title character, while Cassandra Peterson, better known as Elvira, is also on board.

Randal Kleiser, whose credits include "Grease" and "The Blue Lagoon," is directing the film, which has the same writer, Timothy Dolan, and same producing team, Steve Austin and Jonathan Bogner, as last year's "Hansel & Gretel."

"Red Riding Hood" will be a modern version of the fairytale about a young girl walking through a forest to visit her sick grandmother, with contemporary dialogue and music.

Fatone, who has starred in "On the Line," "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and on Broadway in "Rent," most recently played a lounge singer in "The Cooler".

Along with acting and hosting "Fame," Fatone is recording a comedy album due next year.
