I think if they did so much as connect to the internet after that episode they'd know otherwise.

You would think they would know, but a lot of people only look at the numbers. They don't seem to get the idea that just because 7.3 million people watched the episode, it doesn't mean the 7.3 million people liked it. Movie ticket sales are much the same. Higher numbers just mean the advertising worked better.

And a lot of people don't realize that numbers don't always reflect that episode itself.

I don't think this will happen, but for the sake of an example, if ratings plummet now, and stay consistently low, we could blame it on Wreck The Halls turning a lot of people off.

Oh no, I don't think it will. I'm just saying that it's possible for a show to, for example, have an episode get HUGE ratings and then have really crappy ratings after that, because the previous ep with the big ratings was built up, but people didn't like it. Some would look at that ep and think it was the best, when really it turned people off.
