Okay so. Charades. My favorite S1 episode after Dominos.
Paige actually having a dirty dream about Walter yessss. Paige being so surprised at the dream and having to figure out ways to ask what it meant (because that proves that Walter actually had feelings for her first!) Also Paige's outfit in this episode like sign me the heck up mmm hmm mmm hmm good stuff good stuff that's what I'm talking about right there. Walter trying to be convincing over the phone and almost giving it away, then Paige going extreme in the other direction and almost gives it away anyway. The flirt lesson. That got unexpectedly intense. And Sly saw it all. "I love hearing your voice in my ear" MURDER ME WHY DON'T YOU Also Happy with the gloves and the sassiness yes Happy good Happy aw yeah Happy. And Walter and Ralph reading at the end my precious little family being all domestic. __________________

Charades is on tonight, and I am excited! I hope lotsa people will tweet live, as if it were a new episode. It's one of my favorite episodes! I always wonder how many tries it took before they had a usable take of the learning to flirt scene!

You kind of hit most of the high points, Nicole.
One thing that strikes me is that Charades is another example of the geek guy getting the gorgeous girl. True, the girl is an unscrupulous villain who lures him into committing treason - but the love was real. -- Definitely one of my fav Paige outfits of all time, as well. -- I loved how they set up the seduction scene so you just can't really tell who Walter is talking about or to all the time. -- Paige's reaction to the kiss -- "Can you, uh, record a new outgoing message on the machine?...Just realized recently what a nice voice you have." Wonder how many times a night Walter calls that number. __________________

I love how much Walter loves Paige's voice, whether it's singing or just talking. And you just KNOW he was focused on her the entire time he was kissing Sima-he never spoke to her except under Paige's direction and the one time he spoke something that was his own words, he spoke directly to her. And that could have ruined the job - so he definitely wasn't fully aware that she wasn't actually who he was with.
It was delicious. __________________

I want to respond to that, but my response may open a discussion about later episodes - which might be spoilers for people in this thread who are just starting to watch. So I put my response in the Season One thread here

Loved your post, Heidi!
Anyone else have thoughts on this ep? Happy and Sly had some good moments too. My favorite line of the ep may well be "I'm sorry, am I not scaling the building by hand fast enough for you?" __________________

Happy was at her snarky best in this. The competitiveness that came out with her and Miss CIA Techie was just so fun. "All I need... is a paper clip"

It's been a long time since this thread has been used, but I wanted to highlight something I just through up in regards to the episode.
I find it interesting that we see Walter establishing an almost primal, emotional if you will, connection to the sound of Paige's voice. I'm sure he found it soothing and comforting, ethereal even. Maybe seductive and sultry. There's probably a lot of pleasing adjectives I could include to describe how Walter may have perceived the sound of Paige's voice. But what I mainly want to focus on is the feeling of comfort. Since the pilot, Paige has been a comfort to Walter. Walter, who had trust and authority issues, listened to her after hours of just meeting her. He told her one of his deepest requests without much hesitation, he hired her and trusted his team into her hands after one day. In spite of his lack of trust, he'd always Paige. We know that. And perhaps the sound of her voice - even then - was soothing to him shortly after they first met. But... I'd like to point out something that happens towards the end. At the end, we see Walter reading to Ralph. He could be doing anything with Ralph, but he chooses to read to him instead. Now, as I mentioned in the Walter, Paige and Ralph thread that the book had scientific themes, the act of reading - itself - to Ralph isn't what most would view as scientific but as a way to bond / connect. Whether or not Walter consciously knew what he was doing, I don't know, but I find it interesting that he chooses to bond with Ralph with something that involves the voice. It could very well be a coincidence, and I could very well be stretching this idea to the moon and back, but I thought it was cool... how we have Walter connecting to Paige through the sound of her voice, and then we have Walter actively bonding with Ralph through doing something that involves the sound of his voice. Kinda makes me think that Walter was subconsciously letting Ralph know that he can be a source of comfort too. That Ralph doesn't have to ONLY rely on his mother anymore. Like I said, I don't know if this was intentional or if I'm just pulling things out of my ears, but I thought I would share it regardless. Also, I apologize if it looks like I'm writing as if no one knows what I'm talking about. I'm an English major, and the way I was trained to write was to treat the reader as if they know nothing of the topic. So when I write in long responses like this one, I tend to get a little essay-like. Heh. So... my apologies if if seems like that. I try. -_-; |

Good analysis, Kim. I'm of the opinion that, if you see something in a show or a movie or in a book - it's there. It may not have been what the writer intended, but it's part of your experience, and so it is just as real for you as if the writer meant it all along. If you share your views with others, and they see it too, it's even more real.
I can certainly see what you are saying. Assuming Walter does find comfort or pleasure from Paige's voice - or achieves a bong - and that he has some level of realization of that, it would be natural for him to use the same medium in a similar situation. He wants to bond with Ralph - but bonding with others is not something he knows how to do. So he uses the same tool that Paige used so well. I actually rather wondered about Walter reading to Ralph. The kid was old enough to read himself. And as a genius, he likely reads better at 8 than many adults. but that's not what that scene is about. It is about the shared time and the connection. __________________
