The problem is, it involves a show that I don't really like. Although I have watched it, so I don't think I'd need to watch it any more to write the fic. I'm just afraid that the fact that I don't like the show would come through in the writing.

Bringing this conversation over from the Sly thread. While I agree that Happy was probably unused to receiving this type of physical affection because of her childhood, it's always seemed to me that it's something she genuinely appreciates and has craved, especially given how often she's actually the one to initiate it - and not only with Toby. She's freely hugged Patrick from the moment they reconnected, seems comfortable with cheek kisses to/from Ralph, sought a hug from Cabe for comfort when she was upset over her father's incarceration, and, even back in season 1, gave Sly a forehead kiss in the hospital and comforted him with an arm touch when he was feeling anxious. So, while it may be relatively new to her, I don't think it's something she's averse to.

That's very true! So, she's OK when she initiates the display of affection, but she doesn't know how to react if someone else initiates it. She likes to be in control so that makes sense. The times we've seen her falling into someone else's arms for a hug have been when she's lost control of her emotions - when Cabe comforted her after her dad went to prison and with Toby after she found out she wasn't pregnant. She probably sees losing control as a sign of weakness.

That definitely makes a lot of sense where Happy is concerned. If she grew up in orphanages and foster homes, I imagine that might have been part of it, too. It doesn't sound like any of her foster families were very nice, so if they ever hugged her, she probably saw it as being sort of false. But it's more likely that she simply didn't get hugged at all growing up. She may have also had to deal with a lot of bullying in both orphanages and foster homes, especially if the foster homes had multiple children, as many do. I picture that as being something like being in school 24/7. So there's no way to get away from the bullies and you HAVE to present a tough front or get kicked around a lot.

I certainly hope not, since it’s not hers to sell. Her dad left her the keys so it would still run when he got out of jail.
