I've heard that some stars that frequently do conventions are discouraged from giving autographs outside of the events for fear it will de-value the paid ones. That really seems very wrong.

It's a shame that the pleasure and excitement of obtaining an autograph has been tainted by third parties who insist on turning it into a commercial exercise. It seems like a lot of famous people seem to be quite happy to give autographs for free and chat to fans at the same time. From all accounts, RP enjoys engaging with his fans.

I've been to one convention where autographs had to be paid for. There were several guests there that I would love to have an autograph from, but I had to limit myself to just one because of the cost. And that was after spending quite a bit on "Gold" level tickets - even though they did turn out to be worth it, at least in this instance.

It bothered me because the autograph line really felt like an assembly line. I felt for the guests. They did a great job keeping their smiling faces on and trying to at least get everyone's name right and thank them, but they could barely even look up from whatever they were signing. They also had photo ops for most of the guests and those were a bit better. While you were getting in position for your picture you at least had a few seconds to talk.

The really great part of that con was the breakfast with the stars and the disco night - which were part of why the Gold tickets were worth it. In both events, the guests went from table to table - each table held about 8 fans. They sat for about 10 minutes at each table during the breakfast and for about 30 minutes during the disco. It wasn't a well attended con, so there were only about 50 people at the breakfast and about the same at the disco - so the guests got to really mingle with us for quite a while.

Robert is going to be in HBO's reboot of Perry Mason. He plays "Herman Baggerly, a major player in a variety of Southern California industries", so I guess some sort of business tycoon. A bit of a departure for Robert - so should be interesting.
