I just take it as this show's lazy writing. Of course, it was a good moment for WA to have Iris call him but it would have been better writing for him to have seen the news report and come rushing to his son's side.

Because after 15 years of Barry's obsession with getting him out, he leaves his son's side for no meaningful reason.

i totally agrre with you, it makes no sence at all, and Barry must feel kind of terrible, and maybe abandoned again by him?
