ADAPTING FRENCH COMIC ‘THE INSIDERS’ TO FILM? Is it not enough that Jessica Alba has already played iconic comic book characters in “Fantastic Four” and “Sin City“? Apparently not, as rumors swirl today about her involvement with yet another paneled page property. ICv2 is reporting that Alba has acquired the screen rights to a French comic book series titled “The Insiders.” The news originated from “various French language Websites,” which also pegs Alba’s “Sin City” director Robert Rodriguez as her partner in securing the comic’s film rights. “The Insiders” first debuted in 2002 from Jean-Claude Bartoll and Renaud Garreta, yielding seven volumes of the series in France with an eighth scheduled for this October. In the same month, Americans will also see the first volume of “The Insiders” titled Chechen Guerilla — perhaps a move to familiarize stateside audiences with Alba’s upcoming character. Should the rumors pan out, Alba would play Najah Cruz, a Columbian woman with “the weapons expertise and combat skills of a James Bond.” In the series, Cruz is tasked with infiltrating a crime syndicate on behalf of the United States government, where she ultimately works her way into becoming the lead criminal’s body guard. Given the long delays in “Sin City 2” and reports that a “Fantastic Four” reboot is in the works sans the original cast, Alba could be without a comic book franchise to call her own — which is why turning to “The Insiders” could be a strong move for an actress looking to stick with the genre. On top of that, Alba’s first high-profile gig came in the form of “Dark Angel,” a James Cameron-produced television series where she played a hard-as-nails soldier of the same ilk as Najah Cruz. Robert Rodriguez and Jessica Alba to Adapt French Comic, The Insiders? Just when we thought the comic book genre was safe from Jessica Alba she found a way back in. Alba isn’t returning for another round as “The Invisible Woman” from the Fantastic Four, but she is looking to develop another type of hero. According to /Film, Alba and director/producer Robert Rodriguez are interested in adapting the French comic series The Insiders. The Insiders is a popular, multi-volume comic featuring a female lead named Najah Cruz. She’s a professional infiltrator who penetrates billion dollar corporations to expose their corrupt practices. Her mission is “to uncover the various links to the mafia hydra in a game of poker the size of the planet.” Cruz is a Colombian working as an undercover agent for the White House to bring down international crime from the inside. There’s no official word on the production status of the film, just that Alba and Rodriguez are working on a live action adaptation. I’m assuming the actress is looking to star as Cruz, which would actually be great casting in the physical sense. It kind of reminds me of her days on the defunct Fox TV series Dark Angel. As for Rodriguez, don’t get me wrong, I like the guy but I’m starting to think that he will adapt anything that’s not nailed down.

Robert Rodriguez and Jessica Alba Teaming Up For French Comic Book Adaptation Insiders? Posted on Friday, June 19th, 2009 by Brendon Connelly According to a report at ICv2, Jessica Alba and Robert Rodriguez have teamed up to option the French comic book series Insiders. The original source for this information appears to be the French version of Premiere. Insiders is a spy thriller in several volumes, reportedly revolving around the female lead Najah Cruz and I’m assuming that Alba has her eye on this vaguely Dark Angel-ish role as well as the Executive Producer’s seat. In the series, Cruz is a Columbian working for the White House, tasked to infiltrate and bring down a global crime syndicate. Judging from the titles of the seven volumes of Insiders already issued, there’s a whole lot of globetrotting going on: Chechnya, Afghanistan, the Kremlin, some Gulag or another, Peking. And I think that’s in series order. The strip was created by Jean-Claude Bartoll, previously an investigative journalist and also the author of the Terrorist and Mekong comics, and illustrated by Renaud Garreta. If I were Alba and I was looking to get a movie of this series made I’d very probably turn to Rodriguez too. She witnessed his comics-adaptation skills first hand with her role in Sin City, which I’m sure was very compelling evidence. As I said only yesterday, an option is rather far removed from a greenlight, so perhaps we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves with excitement yet. Nonetheless, I expect a good number of folk will sometime soon stop by Amazon France and see what the fuss is about.
