I would probably care more about voting if the popular vote actually mattered.

From what my dad tells me, it doesnt matter who gets the most votes in US does it, its a weird thing about each state and the amount of votes given to them and I am awful at explaining so Ill just stop now.

In Iran we have two rounds normally, if someone gets more than 50% of the votes the first round then they win if they dont then the top two go on to the second round to compete and whoever gets the most votes wins.

Individual states here have Electoral Votes, the number of votes based on the state's population. Some states have laws that give their electoral votes to whichever candidate wins the popular vote in that state, and some split the electoral votes along the popular vote split. But I think in most states the electorals can vote for whoever they wish, almost always according to which party they belong to. So, the US popular vote is largely just for show, to make us feel like we live in an actual democracy.

The electors can vote for whomever they wish, but they're legally bound to vote for the popular vote in the state. Each state's popular winner gets the entire state's electoral vote. The problem is, though, if you win California, Texas and Florida/New York, you're almost halfway there...and you can win 90% of the vote through the rest of the country, but if you win those states, you win the election. It's kinda messed up, but it's the game, and you have to learn to play it.

Ok. Ad Blocker rocks. And I figured out why I was having trouble copying my Firefox bookmarks. Starting with version 3.0 bookmarks are no longer saved in the Bookmarks.htm file. Can't remember off the top of my head, but its a different file type now.

Thats a weird system, the person that wins isnt the person with the most votes but the one that got the more major states?

Oh, it's the most votes...the most Electoral Votes.

It's worked so far, except that one time with G.W. So the system proves mostly correct. Could be worse, England doesn't get to vote on their Prime Minister, they're chosen by the 2 Houses.

Still, to this day, I believe that GW was a better choice than either Al Gore or John Kerry. I shudder to think about what our country would have been like under both of them.
