I may finally get my concealed weapons license soon. A gunsmith up the road is licensed to give them, just needs a class of 12. We have 10 so far.

Hey, I need you to settle something for me, since I'm too lazy to look it up. My father in law and I were discussing small arms fire and got to talking about rifles/assault weapons this weekend (I saw shooter. Not the best movie, but for sniper lovers and gun lovers, fairly nice). An M-16 is a .223. What is an AK-47. I always read they they were a share larger than the 16, like a 2237, but I can't be sure. I do know that you can fire M-16 rounds from an AK, but you can't do the opposite. Do you happen to know?

Yes I do.

First, mil-spec M16 & M4 can fire commercial .223, but their chambered and rifled for the higher powered NATO 5.56mm. The AK-47 fires Russian (obviously) 7.62x39. NATO high caliber rifles fire 7.62x51. While I'm talking, its not generally advised to use 5.56 in rifles stamped .223. But, you should not use the commercial .308 in rifles stamped 7.62x51 because the hunting round has more chamber pressure than the mil-spec version.

I think, I may be mistaken, that dude's rifle in Shooter was a .338 Lapua Magnum.

From what I've read the US Army is cluing in to the fact that the 5.56mm doesn't have the stopping power needed for urban combat. But since the military has already invested in billions of rounds of ammo, they're not going to change it anytime soon. US SOCOM is already switching over to the new 6.8mm though. And the Pentagon is trying its best to get out of that stupid little treaty that bannned hollow-point bullets.

I'm quite shocked that they care enough to try to get out of it. I just figured that they'd start using them.

What rifle do they have that fires the 6.8?

Many of the major AR-15 companies now make 6.8mm versions. I'm thinking about buying a Bushmaster 6.8 carbine. In a full break-apart AR-15 model rifle you can simply attach the lower receiver to a new 6.8mm upper and bingo, you've got a 6.8mm M4.
