I don't know. It seems to me most adaptations tend to oversimplify characters and situations from books. Maybe that is because it is what is easiest to put on film, or maybe it is what an audience expects to see, but really most films don't tend to spend enough time on stuff like that. But at the end of the day, a film is a commercial exercise and the studio won't fund it if they don't think there's a market for it.

oh yes, though there are quite a few times, at least with the bigger franchises, where fans would have no problem sitting through a 9 hour movie just so they can see every detail. I'm like that with certain books, and then I complain about movie makers making changes.

It was interesting readings about CP's journey to the big screen. It tried three times to get to the screen. When it was first released, the rights were purchased, but then they expired. Then they rights were purchased again, and expired. It was the third times rights were purchased that it finally made it to the screen with help from a GoFundMe.

mmmm yes, the director's cut is very long, isn't it?

I'd want Harry Potter to get a miniseries so all the details the movie couldn't fit would be put in.

I have so many books I'd want to see as a film but then I am afraid I'd end up hating the movie because of too many details being cut or changed OR the actors I cast in my head while reading wouldn't get cast and then I wouldn't be happy.

Yeah, sadly thats the thing with books turned into a movie... There will always be stuff that you want in it, thats left out...

Yes exactly, I love the LOTR movies, but there are bits I absolutely hate, and the character or plot changes can irk me. The thing is you'll never see on screen exactly what you want to see.

Same with Harry Potter, those films are great, but there are changes in there I dislike, and often what is happening is not explained well.

The only way you can see everything you want to see is if you become a director/writer/producer and you put it in.

I always wonder for the non book readers, and I am thinking of Prisoner of Azkaban which left so much out, if the audience just scratches their heads and wonder what the hell is going on. Like they recognize so much is missing and it gets them to pick up the book and find out what was cut?

Yes and the ending of Deathly Hallows is an action fest, but it's not explained well how Harry survived or how he defeats Voldermort.

But then exposition in a film is so hard to do...

Yes! They turned it into an action movie where I think the end of the book is more nuanced.

True. Every adaptation would have to do voiceovers, and that can get old real quick.
