Why does Merlin have to black?

I'm not sure ... I thought it was interesting that two characters have to have a British accent. makes me really hope Hook is from Camelot since they have him have a British accent.

I'm a tad confused why merlin has to be black though. Though Lancelot is portrayed as black in quite a few adaptations.

Lancelot was black in OUAT ... and they called him Leviathan (sea monster) so I'm really hoping for a connection with Hook!

I never saw that one. They didn't call for Arthur to be black, just British

Maybe not! Lancelot wasn't from Camelot and neither was Guinevere - at least in some versions I've seen.
