My grandfather's real birthday was the day before me. His fake birthday was the day after me, so I know what you mean.

What's a fake birthday?

His fake birthday is the date on all his legal documents. A few of my family members have a date when they were really born and then a legal date when their families reported their births.

Like my grandma was really born on January 17. But because 17 is a bad luck number in Italy her family didn't report her birth until the 18th. So all her legal documents say she's born on the 18th.

My grandpa's brother was born late Dec of one year, but his family didn't report the birth until January. They wanted to make him a year younger so he could avoid the draft.

I don't know why they reported my grandfather's birth 2 days late, because they lived across the street from city hall and it couldn't have been that difficult to cross a street on the same day as his actual birth.

That sounds so interesting to me. Even when babies are registered here it's against the law to put a different date and time than the one they were actually born. The government can follow it up on hospital records. I think that's so cool and unique though. Never heard of anything like it.

I think it's something that won't be happening now in Italy. It happened back in the 1920s and 30s because babies were being born at home.

But it shows you, don't believe records when you're researching your family because who knows how they've been fudged.

My dad's grandfather has 2 different birth years on his papers.
