I always presumed she was written out..

they were entirely different characters, imo, Genevieve!Ruby was just.... not the same.. she was whiny and just not the same Ruby that i loved, i don't know if it was Katie's acting that made me love her ruby so much or if the writing on the character went a thousand feet down hill in season 4.... im thinking it's a combo of both.

demon eyes on SPN are all black, expect certain demons (Yellow Eyed Demon..... GUESS WHAT HIS EYES ARE YELLOW) and Lillith (who basically ruled hell if i remember correctly, IDEK... her eyes were white, and lillith 'took over' ruby's body in that episode)

I believe you are right that its a combination of both

Katie's writing and then writing did start to go downhill

IMO around S5, people will probably disagree with me but the angel/demon SL they do ... it's not needed & it completely changed their show the first three seasons are what I loved about SPN

I didn't mind Angel & Demon SL

did like Castiel and was alright at first time getting away from first 3 seasons (first 3 rocked) but then after the battle with Michael and what happened to Sam

I never went back after the season 5 finale
