I wonder how it helped her prepare? She had been in CW shows and various movies before, so I wonder what was different about Ruby to get her prepared for Arrow.

That's true, especially since she hadn't had to do that on other shows before. Ruby was headstrong and physically strong. I can see how she utilized that later.
