there was also the curse of twin movies, two films with the same topic coming out the same year as they often do. I watched Mirror Mirror about two weeks before and was seriously underwhelmed by this version after that.

That was the period of fairytales in general - we also got Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters and Jack the Giant Slayer less than a year later. It can happen that two similar concepts are developed around the same time, following a trend.

I didn't see Mirror Mirror - I don't think that one got a good reception either, though.
