3-5. ok. I had a co-worker who liked rats...yes, rats. She has a big cage with little hammocks for them and she said they used one area as a bathroom-pretty smart creatures. But, they only live 2-3 years. So now, all the ones she has are starting to die on her. I don't really think she knew what she was getting into there.

yeah-weird. These are smaller than your normal rat and bred to be gentle and handled by kids or anyone. You know-to each their own but spending as much money as they did trying to save just one of them...to have a pet that only lives 2 to 3 years seems just wrong-putting your kid thru that stuff-getting emotionally attached to them...
