As a guy, I can't help but be sympathetic to Frank's situation. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if Frank and Claire's roles were reversed, I doubt anyone would think Outlander was romantic. Instead they'd say how horrible it was for a man to do that to his wife. Let's say someone wrote a story about a male historian who went on a vacation with his wife to Scotland and visited Craig na Dun, and when he touched the stones he was transported back in time to the Tudor dynasty and fell in love with Mary, Queen of Scots before she was married... or perhaps Elizabeth of York back during the Wars of the Roses. What would women think about a man who did that while his wife was waiting for him back in the 20th century, not knowing what had happened to him or if he was alive or dead?

I don't know about that... if Frank had gone through time and found his true love. I think people would work their heads around it, the same way they did with Claire. I think it's sexist to think that way of females btw, but I won't bring offence here.

So to your question, i think it would have the same outcome.

I agree. The trick is in the storytelling. If a guy went back in time and fell in love, we would have felt sympathetic the same way.

I think it's to do with the sexes. I think males are less inclined to like a man being left behind and maybe some women would see offence in seeing a woman left behind? All in all, i see no problem in either.
