do NOT discuss future books here

The year is 1772, and on the eve of the American Revolution, the long fuse of rebellion has already been lit. Men lie dead in the streets of Boston, and in the backwoods of North Carolina, isolated cabins burn in the forest.

With chaos brewing, the governor calls upon Jamie Fraser to unite the backcountry and safeguard the colony for King and Crown. But from his wife Jamie knows that three years hence the shot heard round the world will be fired, and the result will be independence — with those loyal to the King either dead or in exile. And there is also the matter of a tiny clipping from The Wilmington Gazette, dated 1776, which reports Jamie’s death, along with his kin. For once, he hopes, his time-traveling family may be wrong about the future.

"So what is my most endearing trait?" I demanded.
“Ye think I’m funny,” he said, grinning.
“I…do…not…” I grunted, struggling madly. He merely lay on top of me, tranquilly oblivious to my pokings and thumpings, until I exhausted myself and lay gasping underneath him.
“And,” he said thoughtfully, “ye like it verra much when I take ye to bed. No?”
“Er….” I wanted to contradict him, but honesty forbade. Besides, he bloody well knew I did.

Hypodermic needle? That's an effect I studied in media a few years ago, like a drug that goes straight to the brain?

There are several crazy bizarre roundabout medical methodologies that keep happening ... Makes things interesting.

Started this bugger last week and I'm roughly a quarter through and already a bit traumatized. Claire's experiences being taken by the men who have been killing folks and burning their homes ... I had to take a break after she was rescued because it was too intense -- read a shorter palate cleanser before I started the next part of the book.

Still haven't found out what happened with Marsali and it has been a good while since Claire came back to the Ridge. I want to know what happened to Marsali!

Off to work on my thesis so I can read before bed (this has become my life).

Words such as "intense" reading always gets me wondering...how the heck she can write this stuff. It's not Stephen King level, but it's an extremely tough read at many times through the series. I simple couldn't type some of the most horrific scenes. Ughhh..

Some of the horrific scenes, like rape etc are very hard to read. She writes them so well

She definitely has a way of putting you in the moment, that's for sure.

So, just after I posted my need to know what happened to Marsali, that was essentially the next thing in the book. She's okay. The babe's healthy, if a dwarf.

Now that they've settled back into a more normal routine, I know something's about to happen (because these books do that). Jamie just mentioned the possibility of Bree and Roger going back to their own time (which is funny to me, because Bree was conceived in the 18th century and born in the 20th, so I can't decide where it is she fits!). I'm sure that will continue to be a common discussion as the book pads along. I'm almost 40% through.

You can add me to the OP.

Dianna does pay a lot of attention to detail, which can make a lot to wade through, but it also adds to the story.

I totally agree with you, Chris, though some of the long stretches are a task to wade through -- but I do appreciate her attention to detail and how things will pop up three or four books down the road.

Yesterday, I had to pick up the physical copy of the book from the library because my ecopy borrow is set to expire (and there's a hold list, so I can't renew). It's so BIG! It was pretty humorous ... I went to find my place and the hold slip was in the EXACT place I stopped. It was amazing!!

I've been curious by the reprisal of some different things in the middle stretch of this book. There are a lot of things that have come up, like the incident with Louis/Claire in Dragonfly in Amber and Jamie starting to remember some of the missing pieces of Culloden that he couldn't recall in Voyager. The continuity is nice.

Anyway ... Still reading.

It has been a few days ...

Bizarre turns, with Claire having some sort of serious fever. Definitely a more convoluted writing style. Really bizarre section, but I'm glad she seems to be all right now -- even if they cut her hair while she was fevered.

I finally finished this morning! Lots of crazy stuff, to be sure. Loved that there was so much wrapping up of various storylines in this one. Kind of like Voyager in that way. It's a good place to stop reading for a while.

And I absolutely loved the ending. Loved, loved, loved. So glad Claire found a way to share her life with Bree even after Bree and Roger and the kiddos went back through the stones.
