Abra Kadabra [3.18] - Episode Discussion [March 28th, 2017]
[3.18] ABRA KADABRA ϟ EPISODE DISCUSSION ϟ ϟ DC COMICS’ CHARACTER ABRA KADABRA VISITS CENTRAL CITY ϟ ϟ PROMO ϟThe Flash (Grant Gustin) battles Abra Kadabra (guest star David Dastmalchian), a villain from Earth-19, who makes him a tempting offer – release him and Abra Kadara will reveal Savitar’s true identity. Desperate to save Iris (Candice Patton), Barry considers taking the deal but Gypsy (guest star Jessica Camacho) breaches in to capture the villain for her own reasons and during the melee, Abra Kadabra manages to escape. Barry is furious that Gypsy interfered but Gypsy refuses to back down, forcing Cisco (Carlos Valdes) to take sides. Meanwhile, Julian (Tom Felton) is still a bit cold towards Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) but when she is severely injured in a battle with Gypsy, he rushes to her side. ϟ REMINDERS ϟ - Be respectful. Not everyone is going to agree with you at all times. It’s perfectly fine to disagree with someone as long as it is done respectfully. |

- STAGG Industries still exists? Wasn’t Simon Stagg murdered in Season 1?
- Abra Kadabra is a pretty bad-ass bad guy. - Poor Iris. It’s hard making future plans when you’re prophesized to die in a few months - Why does everyone know who Barry is? And why would Barry admit that they’re right? - Abra Kadabra: Savitar is… Me: Evil!Eddie Thawne? Please? Pretty please? - At first, I was wondering why Iris was the one helping Julian with Caitlin, then I realized the Metas may have needed to run off and grab Kadabra if one of Cisco’s little alarms went off. - Nice way to catch a falling Wally, Cisco! Good job! The “team” needs to be out in the field more often. They get stuff done. - I love it when Barry actually knows how to use his powers without having to ask someone. Grabbing Kadabra from the ship was a sweet trick - I guess the citizens of Central City are so used to weird stuff happening that they don’t bat an eye at a ship flying just above ground level opening random wormholes. - As if we would find out who Savitar was so easily - Why are all the big bads pissed off time travelers that Barry somehow did wrong? Can we have one bad guy that’s NOT one of Barry’s personal enemies? - So… couldn’t Cisco just “vibe” Abra Kedabra before he entered the portal with Gypsy to find out who Savitar was? - Killer Frost on the loose… so it begins. They still haven’t explained why Caitlin’s power turns her evil though. In the comics, she became a villain out of necessity (she’s a heat vampire and will die without sucking the heat from someone), but that doesn’t seem to be how her powers work here. I guess we’ll just have to go with “because reasons” - After watching the April 25th promo, I have to ask – is that Wally in the wheelchair? Are they really going to do the Future Flash storyline from the New 52? (In the comics, Wally was dead, and Iris was in a wheelchair, and Future Barry snapped and started killing all the bad guys… but he never tried to kill Iris when he went back in time). On a side note: It looks like they stole Stephen Amell’s “flashback” wig and dyed it brown… but at least Barry gets a cool new costume in the future. Can he bring that back with him? __________________

I wonder if this is because Barry was originally supposed to become the Flash in 2020, instead of 2014. __________________

Ok, that was...meh.
I honestly can say that after my initial viewing, this was the worst episode of the season. It was to me, literally, all over the place. The only highlight was JLM. He was the only one not phoning it in (Carlos did well only in the ending scene). Everybody else just looked like they memorized their lines, & couldn't wait to be finished w/them. Now, for the lowlights: How in the world did Abra Kadabra come from the 64th century? And why did he need a time machine to get back to it? Wouldn't the tech from the 21st century be primitive to that of the 64th? That's one very big plothole. (Who wrote this ep, anyway?) Also, the guy who played AK looked like the dude from Everclear; I expected him to grab a guitar & break out in song any minute. Another very obvious 'WTH?' moment was Caitlyn being awake during her surgery & giving orders. That. Made. No. Sense. WHAT. SO. EVER. Like I said, who wrote this ep? And when Caitlyn was 'dying', I thought Cool Jerk was playing in the background for all of the OTT acting she was doing. She needs to learn from tips from Grant; when Barry was stroking out in 1x20, it looked real. I was genuinely scared for a second when I first saw it. Now, that's acting! Not to be cold or anything (no pun intended), but when Caitlyn 'died' & Killer Frost emerged, I was pretty much indifferent about the whole thing. Lastly, when will Iris not be the most selfless person on the show?. I know she's trying to walk Barry away from the edge, but her life is more important than a giant gorilla & a murderer whose unrepentant. I don't think she really realizes how important her life is to Barry. Unfortunately, she's not going to the future w/him next ep, so she'll probably never see her importance to him. Even if he tells her (which he does all the time, anyway), she probably won't believe him. |

You know, that KF thing could have been avoided if they just put the necklace back on Caitlin once her wound healed. They had time! It should have been one of those "quick, do it now!" things... but alas, our team doesn't seem to think that way.
It was also a bit shady how Julian accidentally hit her side with his hand when he kissed her, and five minutes later she flatlines. He's the one who took the necklace off to save her, and the one who didn't put it back on. Is he still under Savitar's control, and he just doesn't know it? __________________

Aside from the awesome move Barry did to catch Abra and Caitlin assisting her own surgery, the best part of the episode was the full on transformation of Killer Frost. Danielle completely owned that scene. I have no doubt Tom, who directed the next episode, will give us the goods on what will happen to her next. Great lead in to April 25!

Least favorite episode of the whole season. Didn't find out who Savitar was. Didn't like Abra Kadabra.
