| Katie Holmes Makes Broadway Debut, Doesn’t Suck Her role as awkward tomboy Joey Porter in the TV series “Dawson’s Creek” segued into a successful career in film. Her film career led to her meeting and marrying Tom Cruise (who became a little psychotic once they started dating). Her relationship with Cruise made her a tabloid superstar, a mother, and a Scientologist. Now Katie Holmes is treading virgin territory once again, this time onstage in the Mecca of theater—Broadway. Holmes made her Broadway debut last night in the Arthur Miller-penned play, “All My Sons,” alongside the likes of theater veterans John Lithgow, Patrick Wilson, and Dianne Wiest. But the stars weren’t twinkling only onstage. The audience was pretty blinding as well with Jada Pinkett Smith, Barbara Walters, Isabella Rossellini, and, of course, husband Tom Cruise in attendance. Of her performance, Variety reports that she “handles her role as death's messenger with neither distinction nor embarrassment. She lacks the technique to match her co-stars' depths, working hard at conveying purpose, gravity and a contradictory duality between innocence and sharpness...she projects an attractive modesty that makes her part of the ensemble, not an obtrusive bit of celebrity casting.” In other words, she doesn’t suck. Speaking to People magazine after the show, Holmes said, “It felt like Christmas.” As for her supportive husband: “I was so nervous, and I saw him out there, and he made me feel so much better,” she gushed. “Every time he's there, I just feel like it's going to be okay.” In an interesting side note, a bunch of wackadoos in masks rubbed elbows with the celebrity-studded audience to protest Scientology. Wielding signs that read “Scientology Kills” and “Katie, what has Scientology cost you?” and shouted at the arriving guests. A spokesman for the group, which calls itself Anonymous, said, “Our aim is to shed some light on the human rights abuses of Scientology.” We say: Um, find a real cause. __________________ | |||
