The First Daughter Showdown: It’s Katie Holmes vs. Mandy Moore
Written 04-23-2003 by ChrisFaile

FilmJerk.com has learned that Katie Holmes ("Dawson's Creek," WB's "Phone Booth") has officially signed onto 20th Century Fox’s “First Daughter,” playing the 18-year-old daughter of the President of the United States. This sets up a showdown between this production and Warner Bros.’ title of the same name, starring Mandy Moore…which also focuses on the President’s daughter.

In the 20th Century Fox film, Holmes plays first daughter Samantha Mackenzie, whose life in the spotlight begins to take its toll. Excited about her first year away at the University of Virginia, she demands to be allowed to go to college without having to be followed by a fleet of omnipresent secret service agents.

She is elated when her father reluctantly agrees, and the chance to finally be on her own. But, without her knowing, her father assigns one of the youngest Secret Service agents to follow her around on campus disguised as a student anyway. Delighted with her boy-crazy, fun-loving, in-your-face roommate, Mia, Samantha is discovering the joys of college when she falls fast and hard for her gorgeous R.A., James Lansome. However, she feels betrayed when she learns James is none other than a Secret Service agent, put in place by her well-meaning, but overly protective dad.

According to casting details, Samantha is described as “the all-American teenager, spirited, bright, beautiful, engaging and well-liked.”

Producers are still looking to cast the roles of Mia Von Getz (the roommate), Lansome, President MacKenzie and Liz Pappas—although sources indicate producers are close to inking actors for the latter three parts.

Further descriptions of the four roles are:

Mia Von Getz: Also 18 years old, she is Samantha’s college roommate. Described as a “fun-loving whirlwind,” Von Getz is a middle-class girl, the youngest child of divorced psychotherapists, who is slightly offbeat. The casting notes describe her as “overweight or not traditionally beautiful.” Wanting the typical college experience of parties and boys, she has a passion for just about everything in life. Mia does not suffer the presence of the Secret Service easily, convinced her social future may be mortally contaminated if she hangs out with Sam too much. Used to being the center of attention, Mia is beginning to resent the fact that Sam garners attention simply because of her father. As she says in the script, “ “I’m someone people like hanging out with. And who are you, Sam? You have genetic limelight.” In the end, though, Mia is more than appropriately dazzled when Samantha flies her to the White House in Air Force One.

James Lansome: A gorgeous young man in his mid-twenties, he is described as being intelligent, caring, and articulate. Clearly smitten with Samantha, he is a Secret Service agent posing as the dorm R.A. As much as he’d liked to pursue a relationship with Samantha, he knows the idea is an impossibility. Utterly charming, with a winning and warm personality, he quickly captures Samantha’s heart. Crushed when he must inadvertently reveal the truth to Samantha, he is soon transferred to a post in Idaho. Given some time to think, the love-struck James grapples with the question of whether there are things in life more important than his career.

President MacKenzie: Aged 40 to 45, he is the President of the United States and Samantha’s dad. His job as leader of the free world has to take a back seat to being the father of a headstrong teenager at times. Caught up in the rigors of an election year, he’s not exactly thrilled by Samantha’s antics at college, but remains admirably composed and supportive.

Liz Pappas: The 40-ish Deputy Press Secretary, Liz is a terrific lady. She’s sharp, no-nonsense, efficient and Samantha’s best pal in the White House. Clearly sad to see Samantha leave for college, she tells the First Daughter, “Without you in Washington, it’s just a job. It’s going to suck.” Later, when Sam gets into some scrapes, Liz is there to act as mediator between Samantha and a very upset President. This is a supporting part, appearning in only 5 scenes.

Production for the 20th Century Fox project begins in Los Angeles on June 2. Forest Whitaker (a well-reknowned actor who also has been beind the camera for “Hope Floats” and “Waiting to Exhale”) directs from a script written by Jerry O'Connell. Quoting O'Connell, Anderson Jones of E! Online reported that Holmes was a top contender for the lead role earlier this week.

Bearing a strong resemblance in concept, the Warner Bros. project focuses on the 18-year-old daughter (Moore) of the president of the United States. Tired of being followed around every moment of every day (sound familiar?), she ditches her Secret Service handlers and sets out on a romantic road trip through Europe with her boyfriend.

At press time, both projects are targeting a January 2004 release.

Alcon Loses Title, But Wins First Daughter Race
Wednesday, May 7, 2003 12:35 CDT

Alcon Entertainment has conceded the title of "First Daughter to New Regency, reports Variety. However, Alcon will still be first in the competition to make a movie about a world leader's newly liberated offspring.

With Alcon's Untitled Mandy Moore Project scheduled to begin production May 25 in London for a 10-week shoot, the cast will be rounded out with Anabella Sciorra, Jeremy Piven and Mark Harmon as the president of the United States.

New Regency's First Daughter, which stars Katie Holmes, is slated to begin shooting a week later in Los Angeles.

The projects -- which, at one point, were both titled "First Daughter" -- are angling for an early 2004 release. Alcon's film will go through Warner Bros. Pictures, New Regency's via 20th Century Fox.

Budgeted at $23 million, the Alcon movie will follow Moore as the frustrated daughter of the American president, eager to kick over the traces on her first trip to Europe. Sciorra and Piven play Secret Service agents assigned to keep the energetic teen on track.

Michael Keaton is headed for the Oval Office as he has signed on for a starring role as the president of the United States in the Regency Enterprises romantic comedy "First Daughter." Keaton will star as a president whose daughter (Katie Holmes) goes to college and falls into a fairy-tale romance with a dashing graduate student (Marc Blucas) only to find that her prince has a secret agenda. "First Daughter" is being directed by Forest Whitaker from a Jessica Bendinger script. John Davis is producing through his Davis Entertainment banner, with Davis Entertainment president Wyck Godfrey also producing. Regency senior vp production Kara Francis and president Sanford Panitch are overseeing the project, which is being fully financed by Regency. Keaton, who most recently starred in the HBO telefilm "Live From Baghdad," has appeared in such films as "Out of Sight," "Jackie Brown" and "Multiplicity." He is repped by Endeavor.

Release Date Note: (6/23/03) It's so much fun watching studios pace around each other, like the start of a catfight! After Fox claimed such an early January date, Warner Bros. has one-upped Fox in return, placing their movie on the *7th* of January, just two days before this movie. If things go well in production, I suspect Fox's counter move will be to take a November or December date, possibly at the last possible moment (to catch WB unaware... unless, of course, someone there reads this

I just got home, spent the whole day there and didn't see Katie once.
All her shots were done inside and when she wasn't filming she went directly back to her trailer, and she apparantly doesn't come out till she has too :lol".
I did meet some extras and chatted with one of the cast security people (who provided me with lots of star gossip, hehe). And I actually almost got to be an extra, but they didnt need anyone else for tonite.
They will be filming until 5 or 6am, but im not sure if Katie will be filming tonite, since she filmed until 5-6am yesterday and they may have gotten all her shots.
They will be filming tomorrow for sure, in fact, from 11:30am-2:30pm tomorrow they are having an open call for extras, just go there and bring a recent pic of yourself.
This is wut i found out from talking to PA and security, they are doing a bonfire or pep rally or some kind of big scene tomorrow nite and need a lot of college students, so if u wanna try to be an extra, def go tomorrow. You'll prob have to film till wee morning, and there's no guarantee that you'll be with Katie in any scenes, but it's your chance to maybe be in the movie.

I was there for the shooting at Kerckhoff and Angela was right, Katie had all of her scenes indoors there. I didn't see her at all during this time.

I saw a lot of the second unit stuff they were shooting outside Kerckoff though. Background stuff. The scenes indoors shot until 8:00pm and then it was time for lunch. I was sitting on the second floor balcony when a stream of cast and crew came cascading down this curving stairwell and one of them stood out immediately because of the full length brown coat she was wearing on what was a warm summer afternoon (although it did get real cool as soon as the sun went down). It was Katie. They swiftly descended and walked past the golf cart thingys that ferry them around on set and chose to walk back to the trailers. Although I had only seen her for a few seconds, it left an impression.

I hung around and talked to some people, one of them being someone who casts extras and I got the goods. I found out that the main part of the nights filming would include Katie's big action scene of the movie and I decided to stay. They had filmed some of it the night before but were doing it again for some reason. It was a long time to hang around the campus, but I'm glad I did. I timed their lunch break perfectly and arrived back on the set just as they did. There was an awful lot of time wasted standing around waiting for something to happen, but I guess this is just par for the course for both film and television. I didn't mind it though because Katie was there the entire time. She walked right past me several times. She had her game face on, Katie is very focused on set, she hardly ever even looks around, and, it is understood that while the actors are working they are not to be approached, so I didn't even think it. That was fine with me.

I did learn some stuff about the girl who plays Katie's roommate. I think her name is or sounds like Ann Marie Rodgers. She is tiny and supercute and bubbly, she seemed real nice. Now here is the weird part. I looked on IMDB for that name and the one person with that name isn't the girl I saw. I think she spells the Ann Marie way differently or something. When we find out what her name actually is, it will be interesting to see how far I am off.

Ok, now about taking pictures. It was kind of confusing, at Kerckoff I had my camera out and no one said anything. There was all kinds of crew members about, even security was there and no one said anything. I didn't bother to take any pics of the second unit though, it was mostly all just extras walking around for background shots. Then all of a sudden Mark Blucas stick his head out of one of the upper floor windows making faces to the girls I was talking to. He later came out front and I got a picture. I hope it came out. We'll see in a few days. At the other set where I was so close to Katie...even having the camera out was absolutely forbidden. I found out the hard way too... ...way before Katie showed up, they tested the bonfire (it's gas) and I took my camera out and took a picture. I got a nice lecture from the security dude there. He made it very clear that I would be tossed out of there if I did it again. So, I didn't. Twenty minutes later, standing in a legal, safe spot staring up at the set where Katie has a waterslide scene, a golf cart pulls up next to me and it is none other than Katie, this time in ponytail and floor length blue jacket. That was supercool and so was seeing Katie go down the waterslide. It made the unbelieveably long wait worth the while. She didn't actually go down the slide until 1:00am.
She had on blue jeans, a blouse, and a grey sweater and running shoes when she went down the waterslide Chaz. It was a night scene and everyone was fully dressed

You know, I was wondering about that...I think it might have had something to do with that waterslide that kind of made her nervous. I was told by a security guy who had worked the night before that Katie's slide didn't go so well and that was why they were going to try again.

**spoiler warning**
*
*
*

*
*
*
The scene calls for Katie's character Samatha to fly down quickly on the slide and crash into the bales of hay they had stacked at the bottom. She is to hit the bales of hay so hard she knocks Marc Blucas' character over and into the water that has gathered at the end of the slide. The security guy said she did fine the first third of the slide but came to a stop only halfway down. They did have a stunt double for Katie and watching her go down the slide 7 or 8 times is what we watched for most of the evening. A couple of guys went down too and they kind of hotdogged their slides, half standing then rolling very fast down the hill and just having fun with it. Katie would watch the stunt double live then they would watch the slide on the monitor and decide how to get what they wanted. I think Katie was a bit nervous about this whole slide idea and that is why she was kinda tense that night. When it came time for her to actually slide, I could see why.

We all watched the stunt double rehearse over and over then film over and over and between each slide the stunt crew would prep the slide again and again and every time they were ready to actually film they had to get all the extras back in place and get all of their sweaters and jackets out of the way. All this seemed to go on endlessly. Finally, it was time for the Mia and Samatha character to go down the slide. Both characters had their problems going down. On her first run the Mia character did exactly what the crew guy said Katie did last night, she got about half way down and came to a stop at a weird angle. She started a swimming motion to help propel her downwards a little further but it wasn't a good run. They had her get up and go again right away. Her second run went pretty smooth. She dived head first with good form and slid nicely all the way down to the bottom. Next up was Katie. They put the mark up and screamed out action and Katie made her run at the slide. It didn't go as planned. She was to dive head first and just slide all the way down just as Mia had just done. She lost her balance somehow and when she hit the slide she tumbled over like three times. It was like she was rolling down the hill on her side except that she kind of bounced a couple of times too. She finally flattened out and slid down to the bottom where she covered for her flub nicely. She came up, raised both hands and gave a smile to show everyone that she was alright. She was fine but it was just a little embarrassing. They didn't make Katie do another though. They got the stunt double up there and filmed two more takes right after and then they were done and got ready to go on to the next thing. It was a relief to see Katie walking around alright after that, she had a blanket around her though because she was still soaking wet.

It would have been nice to see her in a more relaxed mode. Maybe next time.

I just wanted to say that I worked on first daughter for the pep rally scene and stood right next to Katie. She is just as cute in person as she is on camera. I loved Dawsons Creek and watched it in high school. When you see her in person, you know why she is a star! She really is beautiful. She was quiet and focused and seemed humble, if you didn't know she was the star of the movie, you could never tell because shes so passive. I see a lot of celebrities ,living in LA, but she is by far the best one in person. Usually you see celebrities and you are dissappointed, cause they're not what they seem. It was cool to finally see her in person after all the Dawsons Creek watching!

On imdb, they have updated the First Daughter's page, adding several cast members and another screenwriter (Kate Kondell, the same of Legally blond 2). Among the others actors, there's Margaret Colin (i like her! I guess she plays the first lady), but no news about the actress who plays Mia. She is still not listed.

I worked as an extra on "First Daughter" on Monday, July 7, in Orange, California.

In my four years of this hobby, I don't remember a production where they spent less money.

Extras were to arrive between 4:30 am and 5:30 am. That's OK, but usually the production company has the decency to provide a bit of breakfast. Not this one.

As the morning wore on filming a presidential motorcade entering town, there was no usual mid-morning break. And instead of the usual abundant supply of bottled water, there were two fellows rolling around a cart with paper cups of warm water.

Thank goodness that the shops in Orange along Chapman Avenue were open. It was a chance to get something to eat and drink.

The best of the day came at what was called "lunch." Basket lunches and no drinks. There was a water cooler in a corner of the YWCA gym where we were. It too produced warm water.

I was bold enough to choose a "chicken salad" box lunch. It was a half of a sandwich with a pasty filling that may have contained chicken. Also included were three pieces of pasta and three tablespoons of salad.

I was glad to leave this set.

Ok, ok, some details so I don't keep anyone up too late here already. Dudes, I was totally dehydrated and I have a blister the size of Rhode Island on the heel of my right foot.

Chaz, don't use this for the site. I'll write up a full account soon.

I didn't get there bright and early like I promised. The best I could do was 12:30pm and I was still waaaaaay too early. Nothing started until 3:30pm. This place was located just a few miles east of The Big ED (Edison Stadium, home of the world champion Angels ).

First thing I did was drive past the front of Chapman College. Schools of kids were playing games. My heart dropped. I tried circling the campus and at one point saw something interesting down a street to the right. Like Holmes, Sherlock that is, I investigated. I am quite the fool out there driving around by myself. The street I chose to go down took me right to the YWCA that was mentioned in one of the accounts written up by one of the extras yesterday. And...low and behold, just across the street from the YWCA were all of the trailers. One of them was Katies but I don't think she actually arrived on set until late in the afternoon.

brb

Ok where was I? Why don't I just answer some of Nike's questions and I'll give ya the whole enchilada later.

Where?

Well, I parked on Grand St., that was the only street I bothered to look at the sign. Everything was happening within two blocks of where I parked. Parking was free too.

When?

They were busy from 3:30pm to 5:30pm, Katie was there from 4:30-5:30. I had the feeling everything else was going to be inside so I left. I believe they were going to be filming until late tonight though.

Will they be back?

If my sources are correct, this is the last day/night at this site.

Did you meet her? Or just see her?

No luck meeting her, I just saw her. She was across a narrow two lane street. Pretty darn close.

Were you the only person snagging pics?

No. This was the awesome part. There were mothers and kids who were 10 times more hardcore than me there. I figured if I hung with them, I would definitely score my beloved picture. Then, it was like a miracle, a crew member came over to us and said it was ok to take pictures as long as we didn't use flash. I was ecstatic! I knew they would have to stand around a lot and I figured I would be snagging tons of pics. But, the joy didn't last. Some Dragon Lady who was a higher up than the first crewmember came over 5 minutes later and said no pictures. I was ready to scream. So were the mums and kids. Some of the mums payed the Dragon Lady no mind and kept their video cameras rolling whenever they felt. I was wishing I had the money to go by a video camera that very moment. Still, with this crowd, I knew anything could happen. And it did.

What was she wearing?

She was wearing the ever present blue jeans, running shoes, purple sweatshirt (even in the heat, I guess it is supposed to be cold at Redmond University) baseball cap with her hair in a ponytail coming out the back of the cap. She was carefully made up with a nice red lipstick and silver earrings. She was stunning! And because of the daylight I could see her much more clearly than the nightshoot at UCLA I was at last time.

Did she make eye contact with you?

Yes. At least I think so. It could be wishful thinking. But I think so.

You got see her running? In the heat? Sweaty (probably)? It's like one of my dreams coming true.

Even in the sweatshirt Katie looked cool as a cucumber. They did have the shade on that side of the street while we stood in the sun for a while. They converted a building that was normally a church into a movie theatre that was hosting a classic fim festival. Katie and Mark are running down the street as they are being chased by reporters with cameras. Katie and Mark (or Samatha and James) duck into a Mexican Restaurant as one reporter goes past them. They come out, spot another reporter chasing them and run down the street right in front of the movie theatre and then turn the corner. I was directly across the street from the movie theatre. Sighting (7/15)
Hi everyone. Just wanted to let you guys know that the filming location for FD is in Downtown Los Angeles. The location is on grand and 5th street. They've been filming here since last week. I saw Katie up close on friday. She's much taller and skinnier in person. Anyway I wanted to let you guys know since friday but I had to register and my comp. time here in the library was up. I know some of you wanted to know the location so there it is. For those who don't know how to get here just pretend you are going to the Central Library in Downtown La. It's righ beside it. The trucks are all parked out side. I have my cam so I'll try to take some pics. If I would have known on friday, katie was soo close I could just extend my arm and touch her. Lol. I could have taken some great pix. Oh well. I asked for an autograph later that day cause I stayed and saw her by herself wandering around, but all of a sudden her bodyguard blocked me and said she had to go to hair and make up so oh well. Oh on friday the filming was at Vera Wang. In the scene, Katie comes out of a black Chevy truck and kisses a girl who meets her there, then Blucas calls her and she turns and says something to him and she continue to enter the store. I could see it all close up. The crew couldn't tell us to back off much because it was filmed on the curve out side Vera Wang so I was lucky. By the way today 7/15/03 they are filming as I type. I'm gonna go and try to take pictures. Bye.

so today as i was coming out of my midterm at UCLA, this trailer opens up. out comes this tall brunette and i immediately recognize her. she is taller than i expected her to be. i didn't want to bother her, she didn't seem welcoming. she was wearing gray track pants with a baby tee, seems like she just woke up or something. and couple of minutes later, i was walking to my class across campus and i was stopped by a staff person becuz they didn't want people entering the scene. they were filming a police motorcade because the president was coming. so yeah. they keep coming back to film stuff. they've been coming back consistently for the past 4 weeks. but being less than a person away from katie holmes was something, i was truly star-struck.

From a Ytadel. @ IMBD message board

Yesterday I was in Los Angeles to do campus tours at USC and UCLA. After the campus tour at UCLA was over, at like 4:00 or so, I heard they were shooting a movie scene in front of one of the buildings. I scurried over, and lo and behold, there was Forest Whitaker giving directions to some actors. I'd never heard of First Daughter before, but I found out about it pretty quick from some people around.

I talked to everyone I could: an assisstant director, a sound guy, the clapboard operator, a couple key grips, and I found out that Katie Holmes was going to be there shortly. So, of course, being both a red-blooded male and an aspiring filmmaker, I stood and waited for a while, watching them do some rehersals. It was a scene where Katie was driving up to a staircase at the college, and walking up it with secret service guys. Eventually, she showed up, just as hot as on TV, and they did 6 takes of the scene before Whitaker decided it was good. Then Katie Holmes walked over to talk to the cameraguy or something, and she was like 5 FEET from me. It was incredible. And I was all like "Katie? You were really great in Phone Booth and Wonder Boys, I'm a big fan!" (yeah, trite and stupid, but I was flustered) She said "Oh, thank you." RIGHT TO MY FACE before hurrying off to review the script.

WOW. Amazing. Then, they were filming the next scene, and they needed their extras to come up and pretend to be fans of the president's daughter, so of course I did what anyone would do, pretended to be an extra. There was like 30 of us up there and like 10 got American flags to wave at Katie, including me. They did about 5 takes, and when the movie comes out in theatres, I'm going to be right up there on screen, standing behind Katie Holmes waving a flag.

Awesome. Best possible day to visit the campus. And then, after they got that shot, they were packing up and I went up and talked to Forest Whitaker about Phone Booth for like 15 seconds.

I'm so buzzed about all this.

okay, well no need for me to tell u guys they're back on the UCLA campus.

was walking home from class at 7pm and I have to pass by Kerchoff on the way home and there they were filming again. Actually more or less arguing about ending the day cause of lighting. I saw a girl in a white jacket at the entrance who kinda looked like Katie, but I wasn't sure cause I was so far away. Anywaiz, they decided to end the day. It in fact was Katie, who happened to just get a cold starbucks from one of the crew members, lol. Didn't go up to her or anything, but I did take a couple (quick) photos of the set, and tried to sneak in some quick Katie photos. They're blurry cause I took them real quick and also cause I was far away.
It seems like they didnt finish their shots and I overheard them saying they'll pick up tomorrow. So chances are if you go tomorrow afternoon in front of Kerchoff, they'll be shooting again.

Katie (well the top of her head, lol)

OMG!!!!! You guys I met her today! Face to face. She is such a sweetheart. She is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. I got there after they got back from lunch and I just watched for some time. Chris her boyfriend was there too and I asked him for a picture and he said sure! And he put his arm around me and smiled. Then I said I was really sorry to bother him and he said not at all and thanks. Then I saw Katie about 2 feet away a little while later and asked if I could get a picture with her she said very nicely that she had to go get ready. Then later I was sitting on the grass while she was getting her make up done. I wasn't going to bother her again because she looked busy and I didn't want her to think that I was a stalker. Suddenly she looked right at me and started to walk over. She said thank you so much for waiting. This was like two hours after I had asked her. I said I really enjoy your work. She smiled and said thank you very sweetly. Then some guy took our picture. I then said I just want to let you know I really want to be an actress because of you and the show and I hope that your movie does well. She smiled and said ohh thank you and then gave me a huge hug!!! She absolutely beautiful in person. Stunning. Very skinny also. Then I said you a great actress and she grabbed my hand and held it for about a minute. OMG. She is just awesome. It was nice because I was the only person she was talking to. There were no other fans around. For anyone that says she is mean they are crazy!! I think that they think that because she is extremely shy but not at all mean. She is a wonderful shy person. Alan: they will be back again tommorroe here at UCLA. I am going to watch but I am going to stay back because I don't want her to think I am stalking her. I think I'll just watch. The call time is 7 AM at UCLA near Royce Hall. I won't get my pictures back for a while but when I do I will post! By guys.

just got back.
Got your message alan, thanx.
I got home around 6:30 and decided to run to campus, just in case they were still filming, which they were. They were filming a scene where she leaves the school, I assume. She looked really bored waiting for them to set up. I took some pics, which I will post soon.
Then I saw a guy wearing nike from head to toe and asked if he was from fanforum, and sure enough it was nike.
So then we watched them shoot, then Katie chat with her friend, and then tried to catch her at her trailer, but the bodyguard said she had to do a quick wardrobe change and best bet would be to try on set.
So we went to where they were shooting later, and waited and waited and waited for them to set up. Then katie came in a robe, and her and the crew were having their dinners, so we didn't think it would be a good time to go up. But we happened to be sitting rite in front of the cast chairs, so nike and I watched Katie eat, lol.
Then they called her to shoot, we watched that, and when they finished we approached her (along with some other girls), and she seemed kinda frightened. When she passed by me, I stuck my hand out and said "hi, I just wanted to meet you" and she shook my hand and said "nice to meet you" and I said "I've been a fan for years, so I just wanted to say hi" Then nike asked her for a pic but she apologetically said she couldn't take any pictures. Then her bodyguards came to her rescue and said "yea, we have to get her back, sorry."
So yep, that was my night, I'm sure nike will be here with his own report soon, hehe.
After 2 failed tries, one view from far away, I finally got to say hi, so I'm happy

Hi this is my first post on this thing! I'm a student at UCLA and have been navigating my way around trailers and extras when running to class. I finally had my first Katie sighting yesterday. In fact Chris Klein showed up to give some support too. He looked kinda dorkish..black tank, jeans cinched with a belt, black rayban looking glasses and longer hair!! I didn't even recognize him at first until some gurlz next to me started going nuts! It was cute..after Katie finished shooting she got out of the limo (where they were shooting her lines) and he walked down where they hugged and kissed hello. I was sooo mad I didn't have my camera!

Today I saw Katie again and ended up this-close-to-her! It was crazy. They were shooting again on Bruin Walk. When I got out of class they decided to break for lunch. She walked up the steps to Kerchoff (Except the sign says "Woody House" or something") where a golf cart dealy whisked her away. I was too tongue tied to say anything. She looked really tired though. She is such a cutie patootie! She had on nice black slacks and a sleeveless cream shirt. She had flip flops on too..and her feet could use some loving. (Don't get mad! I just call 'em as I see 'em! I still love the gurl!)

People were taking all kinds of pics as they were shooting. They have been shooting the past two days on "Bruin Walk"..it's past the student union and it's hard to miss it. I wish I had something better than a throw away camera! If i do get some decent pix..I'll be sure to share!

On-campus filming gets mixed reviews
By Brad Greenberg
DAILY BRUIN REPORTER
bgreenberg@media.ucla.edu

As UCLA students and visitors strolled down Bruin Walk last week, some were greeted by "Dawson's Creek" star Katie Holmes, but their gaping was quickly interrupted by security guards forcing them around a temporary movie set.

While the film shoot excited many campus pedestrians, some students, particularly those with offices in the neighboring Kerckhoff Hall, said the movie crew filming Fox's new picture "First Daughter" was "burdensome" and "inconsiderate."

Seven outreach groups occupy Kerckhoff 408. Community Service Commissioner Justin Schreiber said he was not notified that a film crew would be using that office until the day of the shoot.

"They never asked where things should go," Schreiber said, referring to the camera crew. "It was just thrown to the side."

Room 408's occupants, as well as the tenants of other offices used for filming, received a payment of $300 from Karen Noh, the Associated Students of UCLA's student union manager, who acted as a liaison between Kerckhoff tenants and Fox.

Noh acknowledged that movie shoots can be inconvenient for some, but added that she always asks office tenants for permission before telling a film company they can use it.

"I have never had anybody say no," she said.

Though the UCLA Events Office reports that more than 150 film shoots occur on campus per year, Noh said that on average, ASUCLA buildings – including Ackerman, Kerckhoff and Lu Valle – only support one major film per year.

For years, Kerckhoff Hall and its surrounding area have been used in numerous movies, including "Scream 2," "Old School" and "American Pie 2."

Noh added that though her office is not in charge of authorizing film permits, she believes UCLA is committed to "scheduling them when regular school sessions aren't taking place."

Director of the UCLA Events Office Jack Raab, who is responsible for booking film shoots, was unavailable for comment.

But though few would disagree that there is less traffic on campus during the summer, David Unruh, assistant provost for Summer Sessions, estimated that by the end of summer sessions, 15,200 students would have enrolled in an undergraduate summer class.

In addition to these students, several thousand non-students visit UCLA during the summer for sports camps, conferences and orientation.

For many of UCLA's summer patrons, the excitement of seeing a movie filmed outweighs the annoyance of taking a detour to get through campus.

"It's impressive, I've never seen a movie being filmed," said first-year undeclared student Duncan Morrissey, who was confronted by "First Daughter" while attending orientation.

Yet despite the novelty, some students feel the film crews can be bad houseguests.

"They have to realize it's a school," said Community Service Commission Evaluations and Reflections Director Crystal Lee, who has an office in Kerckhoff. "It's not a movie set."

So I see this crowd on the east side of Powell (the library) and so I walk up and notice there's debris all over the place and a fake "Baltimore FD" truck chillin' there. So yeah I walk up to the crowd and all of a sudden I hear the crew yelling and they're about to film. So I'm like..ack! I'm in the middle of this crowd! So they yell action and this guy (arab american looking fellow, with a goatee...looked familiar) they're filming is on the phone and the script person is reading the dialogue. I caught "violation of patriot act" and the camera turned on the crowd and I just pretended to be a lookie-loo and point at the "damaged" building. Then they yelled "cut! print!" and they thanked the crowd and we all left.

Strange...seeing tons of extras in ATF and FBI jackets wandering around campus with "official" ID's. Creepy actually...

This is one of the longest /quickest running Katie movie threads we've had in recent memory. Let's hope this trend continues.

That is a nice camera Rio had there. I wouldn't mind having one of those myself. I got mine secondhand for real cheap. I like the way my pictures came out just fine though.

Saw this Mandy Moore interview, and "Our" FD film was brought up..

Mandy: I actually read a script a long time ago and it’s very different. Just in the sense that ours is the European vacation and excursion and all of this fun stuff that is happening over the summer and I think theirs is more like a dorm, collegey type environment.

TeenHollywood: Have you ever met Katie?

Mandy: I met her once really briefly and she’s really, really sweet. But it’s weird to be making two films about the same subject. But, I’m pretty sure they will be different enough.

Is Mandy trying to imply that hers will be fun and Katie's won't? Whatever.

Thanks Chaz.

I can't really say which movie will be better. But given that I am a fan of Katie and Forest...I think I'll put my money on FD.

Maybe she's filming the sequel to "Phone Booth," "PB2: Rise of the Cell Phones."

Hey if there's a sequel to Phone Booth does this mean she'll get more airtime?
