If they don't want to go there then I'd be perfectly fine with them just ending the series as best friends who help raise Merediths kids together because the kids already see Alex as their uncle/father figure of sorts. It would just be better this way than bringing some random guy into the picture for Meredith. And as for Alex, he's always wanted a family and in a way he already has one with Meredith and her kids.
