I was going through some del Toro interviews yesterday, and I don't remember if this was mentioned before, but he explained why the long wait until the film gets released:

I guess it's best for Tom's schedule too. I think ISTL will wrap sometime between December into January? Let's hope he takes a break before starting Skull Island in the spring/summer? Than CP promotion in the fall and maybe H-R as well depending on when that will release.
