In the last scene before the "proposal" though he was willing to do it when he asked Lucille for the ring which doesn't make any sense to me. It was a bit distorted, but the movie isn't perfect.

This happens a lot along the movie. I think it's because Thomas is a conflicted character. He is different from Edith and Lucille. They are strong, they know what they want. Thomas is not.
When he is away from Edith he is confident about his plan with Lucille. He is the one poisoning the tea first. But as the time goes by he starts to have feelings for Edith too and that kind of changes his perspective on his life.
I think it was made on purpose. Thomas is the only character that actually changes along the movie.

I can see that. I actually think that even if he was conflicted that Thomas was the most despicable character in the movie. I love him, but the least. It's tragic that his courage came a little too late.
