An easy way to do it is,
- Make a avatar image for the background, and set it off to the side.
- Find out the size of the video you're wanting to use for your gif. If it's HQ It's usually 1280x720.
- I make my background way bigger than the video ( it's usually transparent around the avatar with the animation about a medium size in he middle. This way I can position the clip where ever I want on the animation/avatar and then I can resize to 100x100 pixels.
- Once you've cut down all your frames, you can add the single image last as an overlay (not the actual overlay effect), and using a erase brush, go over the image where your animation should be. It gives it an effect like this. LINK (the last two icons)

It's actually easy.

I always try to make my own gifs. I find it hard to work with gifs that others have made, and I don't feel right about using someone else's work. I know it's an easy route for some, but I don't like to do it.

I know, but I was just saying a lot of people go that route. It's easier for some. I just don't like to do it. Not taking a stab at anyone here.

Mine may not come out the best, and FF does not help with quality. You can only get 4 to 6 frames for the best coloring and size.

Really? I get around 15-21 frames into mine

Your animation may not require as many colors. I like my saturations to be high in bold colors and that makes the size way bigger. I like them to really pop, and they just don't. It could be to that you are using a smaller animation. I believe I got at least 12 in some of my first TW animated icons. They were pretty tiny.
