I've loved Mash since day one too but that's exactly why it wasn't enough, especially that big dangling thread.

I'm well aware of scheduling conflicts with Torrance's new show and yes I'm sure if season 5 had existed they'd have found time to have him return. However, if they had the foresight to shoot that afterlife reunion with Toby before he left, then they should have shot a scene for Bash's return too, especially when they knew the show would always end at Mary's execution. They could have planned, like with Toby, to shoot the scene of Bash returning as promised before Torrance left so they had that in the bag in case they couldn't get him back, which was always a possibility in this business. It's really one good planning with a bunch of other bad ones.

Anyways, frustrations aside, it is what it is now, it's done and I can't change it so we'll just have to accept it. Maybe Bash sent Francis to Mary in the afterlife, I can take that as Bash's help.

Not the same thing.

1. They knew Toby was not coming back...they dis not know this with Torrance.

2. They always knew this frary ending was what they wanted, but they did not have every aspect of tve entire ahow pre planned. They had no idea yet where they were going with Bash.

3. Torrance leaving wasnt planned like Toby's. He told them near the very end iof season 3. Not much time to come up with something that would work under various circumstances. They would need something that would work no matter where they ended. As a writer, trust me, not the easiest thing to do.

^ Well said. It was a completely different situation.

Aww I love that. That's what I choose to believe, too.

The only reason I expect anything or feel disappointed is because they promised and assured me through dialogue that this would happen. If they weren't sure of anything then they should know better than to have Bash make that promise and in fact even say that he's sure this would happen. They put themselves in a box the moment they did that when they could have changed the dialogue to having no promises or not have him say that he's sure of this.

If they left it open ended, I wouldn't have liked it but I'd understand why. But they locked themselves into a narrative problem which they are now retroactively trying to fix with the comments about Bash's fate.

That's true. You shouldn't make promises that you aren't certain you will be able to keep. They could have used less definite language, or left it more open-ended. Perhaps they were just trying to appease Bash and Mash fans with Bash's promise to Mary. It was a very romantic pledge. They knew it would make everyone feel better if they believed Mary and Bash's bond wasn't broken and that he would come back. Plus, everyone involved (including Torrance) really wanted it to happen. Sadly, they just ran out of time.

It was the scene in 2x20 (Fugitive), when they are on the balcony and Bash comforts Mary.

Brave Mary. I’m sorry.

^ Aww, that was a good choice. Kind of fits with the theme I suppose.

It was a very appropriate choice. Almost like Bash was helping and comforting Mary through her transition into the afterlife. I believe he was.

Not sure if that's sad or touching. Maybe a bit of both.

I prefer to see it as more touching than sad. Bash promised that he would be there for Mary when she needed him the most, and even if we didn't see it all onscreen, I believe that he was with her in the end.
