Pike did make Jane sit up and take notice. I'm not sure he would ever have changed the status quo if not for the Pike effect.

That was one of my big problems with the character. He was obviously brought in to the show as nothing more than a third wheel. They made him very flat and uninteresting.

Pike's proposal was one of the most unromantic I've ever seen. She did look less than thrilled.
