I don't know much about this generation on Days, but I suspect the double standard comes from one very simple thing. Abby is a Horton. The Hortons can do no wrong and are forgiven pretty much everything. Ben is basically a nobody. He doesn't have any ties to any of the major families. The one thing that might save him, like Patch (Steve), is his relationship with a daughter of the Brady clan. If his and Ciara's relationship becomes permanent, then he'll gain respectability from that.

Days also loves to resurrect characters. So while it's rare for a principle character to actually die, when they do, they can always come back.
