Even if the Senate doesn't vote to remove the president, just being impeached by the House is a terrific stain on his record. It makes it much less likely that he'll be re-elected.

Clinton was impeached in his 2nd term, so he wasn't eligible for re-election. He's managed to rebuild his reputation, largely because his wife stood by him very strongly and went on to a pretty impressive political career of her own with his support. Plus he's been very active in a lot of good causes, which also helps to make people forget.
