I think they wanted to have some sort of romantic triangle, and they couldn't do it with Jane or Lisbon.

Well, we did get a triangle with Jane/Lisbon/Pike. But I think it might have been more interesting if the Jane/Lisbon relationship got off the ground before Jane found Red John; like somewhere in the middle of season 5. It would have made some of the angst of that last year of Red John more compelling.
