Perhaps because he's a horrible old man who would do anything to forward his own selfish reasons.

To strike fear in Stiles, to show him that he was capable of anything? Because Stiles made a comment he didn't like?

It kind of annoyed me that they didn't let Stiles hit back.. I mean Stiles is not a fighter, but he certainly is no wuss either.. I mean he punched Jackson in season 1. I know that Gerard is a hunter, trained and deadly, but as a fan of Stiles it sucked watching him get hurt, and for Jeff to not allow Stiles atleast one solid blow back.. not cool at all

Stiles hitting Gerard back wouldn't have made him less of a man.. not to me anyway.. Gerard is psychotic, it would have been great to see him be stunned that a boy would have the audacity to hit back. Of course then again.. Stiles is formidable in his own genius way.. a way that Gerard is not
