Aww loove that face she makes.
It must have been a rare treat for her to see him like that, all happy and laughing and telling stories. She clearly enjoyed seeing that side of him. |

I don't like The Message all that much compared to pretty much all the other episodes, but I do really love that scene. It's got Mal/Zoe and Inara/Zoe friendship, plus yay Mal/Zoe war stories! And I love how easy Mal and Inara's relationship is there. No sexual tension getting in the way of their interactions, no arguing, just enjoying the time spent in each other's company.

Being fairly new to Firefly, I couldn't pick up on all the subtle looks and mannerisms between them but out of all the shows that I watch, they probably have the most romantic tension I have ever seen!
My favorite episode of theirs was definitely Shindig because OMG HE FOUGHT WITH A SKILLED SWORDMAN TO DEFEND HER HONOR.  __________________

He was willing to die to defend her honor and she was willing to sell herself into slavery to save his life. The feelings are so strong!
Perfect use of one of my favorite gifs! And yeah, I have two couples I ship more than these two but they easily win in the tension department. I love the commentary for Shindig when one of the women (the costume lady? Can't remember) made some comment to Morena about the tension, and she jokingly said "what are you talking about? We had no tension." __________________

It's been a while since I watched the commentaries, but I vaguely recall that bit! They had some of THE best chemistry on television for sure!

And she gave him an option to run, and he refused - he runs from fights all the time, but not this one, because this one was about Inara. If he ran it would seem like he was acknowledging Atherton was right, and that was the last thing he wanted to do.
