I just hope there's some in-comic explanation for this because it upsets me.

I'm picturing Tatooine here. Isn't Hera a farm planet? That'd be a tie in to Inara's comment in Shindig and Zoe in the deleted pilot scene about not being able to leave Serenity, if they lived on the planet with Serenity Valley.
