I love that affect she has on him - he's been through a lot and seems hardened to most things but when she's even on the ship it distracts him and confuses him and I will always maintain his extreme bitterness at the start of the movie was because she was gone.

I agree with you. Inara took away that little bit of hope he had hidden somewhere deep inside that things could someday become better. Without her there he was a man without any purpose other than to survive and keep his crew alive.

Yep.

He's a broken down man and she was keeping him human. He craves having her in his life and when she was gone, it was like quitting cold turkey on an addiction. So no matter how much he loves Zoe and Kaylee and the others, he was in a sort of withdrawal, and so of course he's going to be more abrasive.
