Julia and longtime collaborator Tom Levitt are one of New York's busiest writing teams, penning the score for musicals including "Bombshell," "Heaven on Earth," "As You Like It," "Ready Money," "Temps," "Hat Trick" and "Three on a Match." In her work as a playwright, Julia's work has been produced regionally and off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons, Roundabout, MCC, Second Stage and the Public. Julia has been honored with a Tony nomination, two Drama Desk Awards, two Obies, and an award for outstanding achievement in the arts from her alma mater, Brandeis University. Film and television credits include "Diary of a Smart Girl," in development at Disney, and the musical drama pilot "Stage Left" at NBC. Love to Leo.

Lots of beautiful pics

Since I mentioned this in the last posts of the previous threads, this is the quote from a Safran interview about Michael and Julia. I notice now, reading it again, that my remember was incorrect, so not exactly like I wrote it in the previous thread:

Quote:

I’m still shocked that Julia ended up with Michael Swift.
That was a seed for season 3. That was a season 3 Easter egg. Our goal was to bring him back and do image rehab for his character. That actually wasn’t a series finale decision. She was always going to see Michael Swift and we were going to wonder whether she was going to be with him next year. But the way in which that happened changed.

Initially she was going to bump into him at the Tonys and they were going to have an interaction in which she was very happy to see him and he wasn’t happy to see her. So it was going to be a reversal of season one and for season 3 she was going to find out that she had to work with him but he didn’t want anything to do with her and she was still in love with him. But in the end, when we knew it was most likely a series finale, we just kept it to the scene at the door.

Same :(

I liked the Michael and Julia ending, even if it was only a scene. There was promise - but after all everything was left open. I know that it was because they hadn't the time to wrap it, but the open ending leave always space for something in the future. It's a wishful thinking, I know :(

I read some people saying that a S3 without Broadway as focus would have brought the show in a position worse than S2, in terms of ratings and all. Since it was a show about Broadway and theatre, focusing on a movie - musical, but always a movie - wouldn't have brought back viewers. So it would have been too far from the original premise, some say.

I don't know, this can be true because with a show about theatre it's a risk to make theatre the B-story. I think the only theatre songs would have been some glimpses of Bombshell and (probably) the Hit List new ones that weren't at the concert (Safran said that we'd have surely heard them in the show). So maybe not exactly a good move.

But maybe the movie would have felt like Broadway, who knows  I would have enjoyed it for sure, but I've never been much critic of the storylines in general.

Who knows? It's also possible that, instead people would have liked the change. I guess for audience having a show with the same plot every season - the making of a musical aka the writing/directing problems, actors fights, Tonys etc - could look boring after some seasons. It wouldn't be boring for me, but maybe in general it would  a movie with the theatre feeling could also attract not Broadway fangirls, being a more "open" theme.

I still think we need a what could have been thread...

I don't know that the change would have necessarily hurt the show more. Some may have stopped watching but anyone watching for the CAST &/or the MUSIC should have stayed. Then some may have started watching it since it moved away from the theatre a little. The show may have struggled to keep going just in the theatre, it had to grow - all shows grow as they go on. There was more to Smash than just the theatre shows. Providing it kept the same feel to it, had the same cast, had the music still, I see no reason why it couldn't have gone on & still been good. There's always going to be people picking on things or not being happy but you'll never please everyone

The thing is that the promoted it since the beginning as the show "about Broadway and musical theatre", it wasn't like Glee that had more space and included also theatre. I wouldn't have minded to see Hollywood too, because I'm sure it would have felt like Broadway and maybe the silver screen would have interested more people, but audience is complicated
Broadway is felt like an "elite" in some way, the cinema is less like that. Musical movies always have theatre fans critics, after all.

True.

shinebrighterxx 04-29-2014 06:57 AM

I missed it in the board guide the other day then  I'll visit it tomorrow

That's true, I didn't think of that. But shows still change, & as you said broadway is more elite so it may have opened things up more if they moved into movies
