the CF book says that in THG50, Haymitch's games, he was pretty much a loner and spent the first week running/hiding until the volcano exploded killing over 20 of the tributes, including two D12ers. the other D12 tribute was Maysilee Donner and was his partner, but he lost her to a mutant bird attack after they split up because he wanted to mess around with the force field wall and she didn't, she wanted to keep moving. it was just Haymitch and a D1 female Career but he tricked her into throwing her axe at him ( he was laying in front of the force field) and it missed him, hit the field and bounced back into her head, killing her. he survived his injuries and became D12 first victor.
